How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?

people tell me that i would know if my car feels like its holding back, but what if i dont know if my car is holding back or not?

because i bought my car used and i dont know how the feeling is supposed to be, but ever since then, i have had my brakes changed beforeHow do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
The brake pads usually touch the rotor a very small amount even when youre not pressing the brake pedal. Most rotors have a tiny bit of warpage to them from use. The best way to tell if the pad is dragging is if you smell the brakes. They will smoke when you park the car, and smell very strong. If youre wondering if one of the pistons in the caliper is sticking while pushed out, it will usually pull towards the side that is sticking. Also, you can tell if the pad wear is uneven between the two sides. There really is no reason why both calipers would be so far extended that you would feel a noticable drag. If that were to be the case though, expect to replace both calipers.

EDIT -

Throwing water on a hot rotor can warp them. Youll be spending even more money to fix a problem that you didnt start with. Rotors can warp when they are hot and cool down suddenly and unevenly, such as being hit by water standing in the road. If you drive for an hour or around the block, when you brake the car to a stop and get out, the rotors will be hot. Period. The brake pads are stopping a 2000lb or more vehicle by rubbing two pieces of metal together. Theyre going to be hot. Dont throw water on them. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
check for heat after driving for a while. find a small hill. stop at the ape and put it into neutral and see if it starts to roll backwardsHow do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
Take it to a brake shop. Let them tell you by having the your car jacked up on the lift and the tire off. It's safer and usually free. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
The BEST way is to drive the car for 20 to 30 minutes and CAREFULLY throw some water on the wheels. IF the brakes are dragging, the water will steam. Use a small cup and or take a mouthful of water and squirt it on the wheel near the brake. ALSO you can feel the tire near the rim. IF its HOT or warm, take the car to a brake shop. They will check it free. I had a car with the brakes dragging and I had to get New brakes after 10 k miles. You can also take the car in to a BRAKE shop that has FREE inspection, and get their opinion. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
If you are concerned about it %26amp; can't really tell just pull the tires %26amp; look. There should be a small gap between pad %26amp; rotor unless brake applied. Or take your car out for a drive around the block a couple times. Then check rim. A dragging brake will be extremely hot. If pads wore out you would here a squeel from the low brake spring indicator.

All else fails watch for smoke!!!!!How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
the pads shouldnt be dragging,if the calipers are releasing them from the rotors.

MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?

I HAVE CHANGED THE CALIPER TWICE WITH SECOND HAND ONES, CHANGED BRAKE PADS AND DISC IT STILL GOES TO THE RIGHT AND THE WHEEL RIM GETS RED HOT, DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST FOR A BRAND NEW CALIPER ITS FOR A N REG ALMERA 1400 GX AND COULD ANYONE TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENING AFTER I HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
Check your front wheel bearings...

Loose or bad bearings will cause the car to pull, and the slop will also allow the brake to drag and heat the wheel.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
Never would a bad alignment cause a rim to heat up red hot. You will cure this by changing the flex line on the right side. It's got a restriction, and keeping fluid from flowing back to the master cylinder when you release the brakes. Your best bet is to get 2 rebuilt calipers while you're at it, or at least make sure the ones you have work freely also..BUT DEFINITELY NOT ALIGNMENTMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
I agree with The brake hose holding pressure, its the reason your wheel and stuff are hot after driving,an alignment would cause a possible torque pull but would not get hot.You should change both sides if one is holding pressure the other is next. You should flush brake fluid also, should be done every now and then to keep boiling point down on fluid.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
A front end alignment means you need the tracking checked and

re-aligned. this will cure the pulling. Keep in mind that your Tyre pressures need to be equal, too. As this can give a similar symptom.

Dr AntonyMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
Could be that you need an alignment, but also, when ur braking, if ur car also turns to the left or right your frame might be broken! Definatly something you should check on!MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT!

YOUR CAR'S ALIGNMENT DOESN'T HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH THE BRAKES!!! AND AN ALIGNMENT SEEMS TO BE JUST ABOUT THE ONLY THING YOU didn't HAVE DONE!!!!MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
alignment and it can also be as simple as checking your front tire you might need new tiresMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
YES, YOU NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT! MAY EVEN NEED SOME STEERING PARTS! YOU WILL FIND OUT WHEN YOU GO TO GET AN ALIGNMENT!

Can anyone tell me more about the price to put disc brake?

hi..

i'm doing XC and sometime cycle in mud and rain

so, i need a disc brake

but i need to change the fork and maybe wheelset

i can get a scott 100mm fork at 75SGD

and, i need to get a shimano wheelset compatible to disc brake (as cheap as possible) because of some problem

i'm currently using a shimano dual control V-brake lever

1)i don't know if scott suspension is good or not.. please give some advice

2)does anyone know how much is the cheapest i can get for shimano wheelset? (state country currency)

3)do i need to change the lever if i use mechanical disc brake? Can anyone tell me more about the price to put disc brake?
Hi... I don't know how good the Scott fork is, I've never heard of it. Don't go searching for Shimano wheelsets, I think they only have expensive ones (not sure, but I think that they only offer it at XT and XTR levels).

Check pricepoint, they have some good offers on wheels.

http://pricepoint.com/detail/12001-365_S

This aren't the flashiest wheelset, but they work.

For forks, check RockShox Tora or Marzocchi MX series. Probably from 200 to 300 or so.

For brakes, if you want mechanical brakes, go with Avid BB 7, they're by far the best mech ones.

http://pricepoint.com/detail/12605-115_A

They're like 65 per brake, so it's like 130 bucks for the pair, but consider something more for cables and manual labor.

  • Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?

    Hi,

I have a suzuki swift sport, and it has done roughly 14k miles..

I have noticed that the brakes tend to sqeal if I either brakes lightly or very harshly......

Is sqealing brakes a sign that they need changing?

How can I get rid of the sqeal?

Thanks - Matty :DSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Nowadays it's the pads that last for ever and the disks wear out, ever since they took the asbestos out. However 14 k is not very far and I would expect there is a build up of brake dust causing this. IMHO around 40k should be the life of a brake setSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Yes, it is a sign they need changingSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Its a Sign that the pads are completely worn through and the squealing is metal scarping against metal.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
It doesn't necessarily mean that the pads are worn, but it can do - have the brakes inspected at any local independent garage if you don't know what you're looking at yourself.

At 14,000 miles, it shouldn't need new pads unless you've been very heavy on the brakes.

If it isn't pad wear, the car could just need the brakes stripping, cleaning %26amp; some copper grease applied to moving parts.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
They may need replacing - you can only tell by looking at the thickness of the linings which hould not be much undr 2 - 3mm.

May be able to cure with anti=squeal shims, which go between the pads and brake pistons.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
I bought a new Malibu and it squealed at 2k miles. This is how I fixed it. Go to your favorite parts store and get a spray can or bottle of brake squeal preventer. You will have to remove the brake pads and apply the brake squeal preventer on the backs of the pads and mating brake surfaces.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
not all the time ! sometimes it,s only brake dust. get some brake cleaner and spray the brakes.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Dry weather with lots of dust and dirt can cause squeals - just check them for wear. 14k miles seems a relatively low mileage.

How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?

Ok, my handbrake started to slip a few months ago, as in it didnt grip when i put the handbrake on. I could push the car while the handbrake was on. So we tightened the handbrake from the bolt under the driver seat. after a few weeks the problem happened again, and we tightened it agen, etc etc, it happened agen, etc etc same thing every couple of weeks.

So we change the read DISC brake pads, but i read that the handbrake might be operated by a drum brake on the inner side of the disc?? anyone know if that a fact for EA's or is it a diff model that uses that?

Now that there new pads, i think its tighter, but still, i can push the car with the handbrake is on.

I read on a site there's another way to adjust it, but it didnt say how. I can't find any useful forum posts, so can someone direct me to one or explain how to fix it ??

please help???How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?
From the EA Falcon workshop manual:

The handbrake is operated by a pull-type mechanism located to the left of the steering column. Cables connect the mechanism to the rear brake calipers. The cables operate screws in the rear calipers which force the pistons out and clamp the brake pads onto the brake discs.

    TO ADJUST HANDBRAKE

    (1) Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on chassis stands placed under the rear axle housing. The placement of the stands is important, as the adjustment must be done with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels or axles.

    (2) Release the adjusting nut on the equaliser rod so that both the caliper levers are in the fully off position.

    (3) Start the engine and apply the footbrake 20 times with a minimum pressure of 500N. Stop the engine.

    (4) Tighten the adjusting nut on the equaliser rod until the distances from the handbrake lever tang to the caliper body stop on the left and right hand calipers add up to 6mm.

    (5) Tighten the locknuts on the equaliser rod adjustment.

    (6) With the handbrake released ensure that both rear wheels are free to rotate.

    EDIT:

Heh, about the other question you asked... Okay, granted you can't drive the car to a mechanic, but there are still mobile mechanics available. But I understand what you mean, sometimes it CAN seem lazy to just answer a question with %26quot;Just take it to a mechanic!%26quot;.How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?
Most cars that have rear disc brakes use a drum brake inside the back of the rotor. Where does the hand brake cable go? If it goes to the caliper, the only thing I can suggest is apply the brakes with your foot and then while holding the pedal down, set the hand brake. If it doesn't go to the rotor, it is and adjusts like a regular drum brake.

How do I change the Front discs on a Ford Laser KB 1984 Model?

I am not in any way shape or form mechanically minded however I have a friend who is willing to help me out changing the discs, we would just like to know the process of doing so as neither of us have ever attempted this before!

If anybody would be kind enough to give us a step by step guide, we would love you forever! We have tried googling but as we are newbies at this we aren't too sure what the names of the parts/various nuts are etc and it has gotten quite confusing!

I am having to replace them as my ex boyfriend replaced my brake pads around 3 months ago but one of them has now worn completely down for some reason, which in turn has worn down the disc. I am replacing both discs and pads just to be safe. Should this fix the problem or would this be caused by something else (caliper possibly??). Any advise would be VERY much appreciated! How do I change the Front discs on a Ford Laser KB 1984 Model?
If brakes wore down in three months, you have a SERIOUS problem. No insult intended but two novices should not attempt this repair. The pads and rotors are actually very easy to change but the diagnostic for the seized/malfunctioning caliper should be done by someone with experience. How do I change the Front discs on a Ford Laser KB 1984 Model?
First I would see if a shop manual is available online or from Ford and follow the procedure. Brakes are obviously an important component for safety and I would recommend you have a qualified shop look at the car.

How to tell if my axle is bent ?

I spun around in the snow and really bent my rim pretty bad after replacing the rim I still have a squealing coming from that wheel. I just changed the brakes, rotors and e-brake pads they are rear disc's so the e-brake is separate. The first day there was no noise then the next day the squeal was back. If I have to change the axle how hard is it.How to tell if my axle is bent ?
Vehicles have a large variety of systems. You should specify make, year and model, if you expect any constructive help. How to tell if my axle is bent ?
Make your wheels and steering wheel straight and go into a straight line. If your axle is perfectly straight, theoretically you would go straight. If your axle is bent, it will slightly swerve left or right. Replacing an axle is very difficult to do yourself, and getting it done at a mechanic would run you about $1000 per axle.

if you find the wheel is moving freely then it may be dirt on callipers. if callipers touch bleed the system and readjust the gap. this you can make out if screeching is only when handle is in some particular positions.

How difficult is it to upgrade from "SE" front brakes to "ES" front brakes on a 2000 Dodge Stratus?

I have the SE model which has 14 inch wheels and discs in the front and drums in the rear. The ES modes has four wheel discs and the fronts are a bit larger. I'd like to change out my front discs to the ones used on the ES model. Is this feesible? If so, how difficult is it? What is involved? Do I need to change the master cylinder? How difficult is it to upgrade from %26quot;SE%26quot; front brakes to %26quot;ES%26quot; front brakes on a 2000 Dodge Stratus?
you would need new proportioning valves, modify your rear brake lines, you would need hoses, calipers, rear disc brake adapter, obviously rotors, pads just for the rear. i think in the front you would just have to replace calipers and rotors. it would be very expensive to do this with new parts. if you really want to do it you should buy junkyard parts (not calipers or hoses) and save a few hundred dollars. How difficult is it to upgrade from %26quot;SE%26quot; front brakes to %26quot;ES%26quot; front brakes on a 2000 Dodge Stratus?
in order to do that you would need to find a car in a junk yard to get most of the parts from, you have to basically change everything on the car to do this, even the emergency brake cables, everything, and you will probably wind up buying new rotors and calipers for it ,so id think about that one,it can get pretty expensive changing everything, all the abs unit even has to be changed, its not hardly worth the effort to do this, but it can be done, good luck on it.

My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?

The reason I looked at my brake fluid was because my brakes were a bit spongy (the pedal went all the way to the floor) the other day (they're fine now, even before I added a little brake fluid). But, when I went to add a little bit of brake fluid to bring the level to the 'maximum level' line I noticed how brown the existing brake fluid was. The new brake fluid was crystal clear. Do I need to change the brake fluid? How often is it suggested to replace the brake fluid?

Also, it was pretty hot the day my brakes went spongy. Could it be due to the brake fluid overheating and not working effectively? I have a 89' Honda Civic HB with non-power disc brakes in the front and drums in the back.My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
Yes, the brake fluid can need changing just like all of the fluids in your car. If the brakes were spongy you might want to check the master cylinder. If the pads are more than half worn go ahead and do a brake job changing the fluid. My brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
you can at any time flush your brake system. this can be done with rented items from advanced auto.. or auto zone..

or from somebody like Midas or Meineke.

as far as the %26quot;spnoge%26quot; brakes that is not the fluid.. I would look more toward the master cylinder...or power booster..

you could go to one of those shops above if I remember right they give free est...

which would tell you what is wrong with the car then you can decide if you can do the work or not.. if not you know what it will cost youMy brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
If you steped on the brake pedal and they were spongey, then were ok the next time you steped on the pedal, is a sign, your brake cylender is going bad. no idea, when it will let go totally, but when the cylender is changed, all four brakes will need to be bled off. sinse fresh brake fluid must be used, after all is said and done, all will have fresh clean brake luid once againMy brake fluid seems really dirty (dark brown). Does it need changing periodically?
The brake fluid is probably okay. sounds as if you need to have someone help you bleed the break lines; usually when the break pedal feels mushy it is a indication of air in the break lines

How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?

Do I have a wheel drum, or disk brakes... I Know the Mechanics look for women like me, and i just want to nip it in the butt and take care of it! Please Help..I need detailed instructions! =) Thanks,How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?
Go to the library and look in a good auto repair manual like Chiltons. Study the part on your car's brakes and get a good understanding of how the parts relate to each other. If you are confused after that, bite the bullet and don't try to do your brakes- go to a shop. The book will tell you what to do in normal circumstances, but there is potential for many other conditions to exist. If you still want to do the job badly enough, get together with someone who has worked onbrakes and will be eble to judge what's right and what's odd and unusual. Gremlins always prey on novices.

You need a set of metric wrenches, a jack, a pair of jack stands- or at least one jack stand and a couple of wheel chocks to keep the car from rolling while jacked up, some pliers, a brake spoon or large screwdriver. When you take the wheel off you will see a brake disk or drum. Chiltons will show you what you have. Get some fresh brake fluid to use to flush and bleed the brake lines.

There shouldn't be unusual difficulty unless the brakes are worn out and have scored a drum or disk. It's easy to lie to somebody about their brakes when they have no experience. Not every shop is staffed by liars, but it is worth being a little concerned about. You can save a couple hundred bucks doing the brakes- or wind up spending that and more if you try, then mess things up.

There's really too much to say about fixing brakes to be thorough in a forum like this. How do you change the brake pads on a 1993 Subaru Legacy, and what tools do you need?
To prevent buildup of condensation in the lines and subsequent corrosion, the lines should be flushed every couple of years. Brake fluid will absorb water from the atmosphere. You'll not regret having the book- knowledge is power.

I have a Mazda MX-3 GS V6...it has 4 disc brakes. I went to change my brakes and notice that I coudl not bleed the pass. rear caliper, but the other three bled normal... so I took off the calliper to see if it was seized, but it was movable, and I even changed the piston boot and rings...so I started chasing the line unhoooking and trying to bleed at ever connection and no fluid...I followed the pass rear brake line to the proportioning valve, and thats where I stopped...could anyone explain how a dual proportion valve coudl malfunction if that is the case?Pass. Rear brake not engaging...not bleeding...caliper is not seized...follow line to dual proportioning valve
It seems odd, even unfortunate that the valve would be siezed on such a new auto, but nothing is perfect. Good thing you have the wherewithal to research this it could have been an expensive fix it at a shop. Good luck getting everything swapped out and bled. That can be a tight area to work in and if even one of the lines to the PValve won't come loose it can be a knuckle busting, frustrating job.

How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?

My front rotors are fine, but the pads are worn down to the point that

they squeak. I am wondering how you compress the pistons that put pressure on the pads to A. Get them off, and B the new pads are thicker, so you have to make room to get them back on somehow.

(I'm too cheap to have a brake job, and know I can do this myself for a lot less)How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
take the cap off the resivour take off the calipers leave the pad on the side with the piston get a large c clamp and screw it in they (the caliper pistons) dont move as easily as some would let you believe but a c-clamp is relativly inexpensive and it will workHow do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
Make out you have broken down and call out the AA and they will do it for you.How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
An old tried an true method is to remove the cap to the master cylinder reservoir (where you add the brake fluid) and just press in on the calipers (the things that push on the brake pads) they should move in relatively easily. Be sure to firmly attach the reservoir cap when done. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
My favorite tool for this job is a crowbar. Use the flat end and insert Between the caliper and the piston. Make sure you are pushing on the center of the piston and not on the rubber boot around the outer edge of the piston. Remove the cap from the master cylinder and place a clean dry rag over the opening to keep dirt and debris from falling in while it is open. gently apply pressure to the piston until it is fully seated. Replace the pads. Replace the cap on the master cylinder. Press the brake pedal firmly several times to fully seat the piston onto the pads. Replace the tires and wheels and you are done. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
Just be sure to check your rotors for scoring (the squeel means you might be down to metal), in which case you need to have the rotors turned and a brake shop is your best bet. If you shop around someone will give you a deal. If you must do it yourself, make sure you have transpo in case the parts store gives you the wrong pads. Use good quality pads so they last a while. Use the lubricant they give you in the kit. Use a pry bar to compress the pistons and open the calipers and most important, have a couple of cold beers handy and a bud to chat with while you're wasting double the time it will take the shop to do the job. P.S. If you're married, don't let your wife watch. It will drive both of you crazy. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?
Just push the pistons in on Both front or both rear which ever side your doing, push them all the way in until they bottom, buy a caliper piston tool, I usually push them in with the old pad to avoid damaging anything.

If it's like a honda I wouldn't do it if I were you, but if its an american car it should be real easy, I would say just go down to the parts store buy New rotors and middle of the road pads, I have found if you put really cheap pads on car they don't last long. If the new rotors cost more than 35 $ I would concider getting them turned if they are not to thin. Only thing to remember is lube end of pads on slides don't lube face of pad make sure both slides that attach to caliper move freely , lube those to.

What kind of cars are easy to take care of?

I'm a mildly competent do it yourself kind of guy and I don't mind learning how to maintain my own cars. I've successfully changed belts, brakes (disc and drum) plugs, filters, distributer caps and wires, etc. I've had varying success between my 2003 Dodge Intrepid and my wife's 1996 Infiniti G20 and 2003 Ford Taurus and it's clearly evident that come cars are FAR easier to work on than others.

How to change rear hub assembly on 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

I have changed the front hub assemblies---all the bearings are bad---but the back looks completely different. The back has disc brakes(not shoes). I had no problem taking off the rotors and the brake calipers, but now I don't see what to do next, as they are not the same design as the front. Anyone know anything about the back ones? How to change rear hub assembly on 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

  • Question about brake/brake pad?

Hi, I have a 2006 honda civic LX. About two month ago, I found that whenever I step/push the brake, there would be some noises coming out from the car. I was thinking it might be time for me to change the brake pads as my car has now 85000 miles on it. (And I know that when the brake pads are worn seriously, there will be some noise coming out) However, after neglecting the noise for a few weeks, I now only hear the noise once a long while...so I am not sure wt's going on and what I should do. If the brake pads are really worn out, shouldn't that noise coutinue until I replace the brake pads?

Btw, if in case I do need to change the brake pads, do I also need to change the disc or re-surface the disc? how about rotor?...I am not good at car and I totally have no idea whatelse would need to repair/replace together with the brake pads.

Any opinion would be appreciated. thanksQuestion about brake/brake pad?
The occasional squeaking your hearing is usually caused from what's called %26quot;Glaze%26quot; on your rotors. It squeaks because of the material your pads are made of becomes embedded in the rotors over time. Usually the squeak will be heard when the pads haven't heated up yet and/or under light brake application. The cure would be to either live with it until you actually do need the pads changed, or change them now. Honda rotors can be machined but the labor to do so costs almost as much as the price of a new rotor these days. You don't have to go to a dealer to have the brake work done, although if you do Honda dealerships do use the best parts for your car. You can take your car to a privately owned shop that uses quality pads and rotors and get the same job done and at a lot cheaper price. Ask family or friends who services their cars for them and you should be able to find an experienced, hopefully honest shop. Good luck and hope this helps.Question about brake/brake pad?

Your life is riding on these brakes. From your question, it's obvious that you need to take the car to a qualified repair shop. Brakes are not a job for a %26quot;first-timer%26quot;.Question about brake/brake pad?
If you are %26quot;not good at car%26quot;, you need to get it to a reputable brake shop for an inspection. Don't put your life and that of those who ride with you at risk by attempting a job you are not qualified to do.Question about brake/brake pad?
Pull the wheels from the car and find out if the pads are worn, this car will have a squeal tab on each wheel, so you should know if they are worn. Also, before you take the wheel off, see if you can wiggle it, it should have very little to no wiggle.

If you need new pads ALWAYS resurface the rotor or you will be defeating the purpose and it will squeal like a madman. On this civic, try to use only ceramic or semi-metallic pads, NEVER organic (they tend to do very poorly and don't last long). Hope this helps you.

Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?

My automatic 150cc scooter has levers for front and rear (disk) brakes, and both are VERY tight with almost no give. Can this be adjusted? I've read through many manuals and researched, but everything talks about how to change the pads (or about how to adjust drum brakes) and things like that and not if the levers can be adjusted. Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?
disk brakes are not adjustable, if your having trouble then I would suggest new pads or take it to a mechanic. Can disk brakes on a gas scooter/motorcycle be adjusted?
may have screw adjustment at the lever on the bars,,

if not then you can take the lever off %26amp; file a small amount off the part that pushes on the piston to give a small amount of free play..

well, brakes are a huge safety thing so if you dont have someone with you that knows what they are doing, i recomend you hire a pro. but if you insist on doing it yourself, there are some special tools you may need. I.E.= torx sockets, if your changing a hose or a line, you may need a line wrench so you dont strip the bolt, also a calliper spreading tool is handy. its also a good idea to clean everything (rotors and callipers) with brake parts cleaner. especially if you are installing new rotors. one more thing, the stop squeal goo that comes with the new brake pads, it works, but makes sure you put it on the BACK SIDE of the pads! How do i change a near side brake hose on a ford escort?
If you don't feel confident with the thought of the jobs don't attempt them. Hydraulic disc brakes?

I would like to know everything about hydraulic disc brakes for downhill bikes. i have a 2004 giant dh comp and haves hayes sole disc brakes. what better disc brakes can i get for a good price? i would also like to know how to maintenance the disc brakes. i would like to know how to bleed them and when i should, how to change the pads and when i should as well. please help me with this and i would also like a good descriptive answer. and im 15 if that may help.

    thanx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Hydraulic disc brakes?
Considering Hayes Sole brakes are low end, almost anything would be better. Although, they're not horrible.

There are many brands that make hydraulic brakes - Hayes, Magura, Shimano, Avid, Hope, Formula and the list goes on. The only determining factor behind which one to buy is what you can afford and what you can find on sale.

Personally, I've had Hayes HFX-9 and Mag hydraulic kits on most of my bikes for years. They are great brakes, modulate well and only require the pads to be replaced occasionally as far as regular maintenance.

They use automotive brake fluid so when bleeding, you need to be really careful to do it outside and not over a surface you care about. If it leak on anything plastic or painted, you will ruin it. If you get brake fluid on the pads, you will ruin them as well.

On the last couple of builds that I did, I used Shimano Saint calipers on one and Deore calipers on the other. The bleeding process for the Shimano brakes is a bit easier as they use mineral oil, which is not as hazardous to your surroundings. Most of the bleeding process is done from the levers so the risk of leaking on the pads is less. I found them easier to deal with.

My Saint kit is great. The stopping power and modulation is pretty phenomenal and I think the going rate for the parts are about what the Hayes HFX-9s are going for. Considering that the Saint are better, it's a good deal.

I have lots of friends who swear by Avid Juicy series kits and others who swear by Hope. Hope is a little more expensive but really nicely made.

Each of the types of brakes will come with instructions on how to install them, calibrate and bleed. They are all different.

One other benefit that many of the newer Shimano series brakes have is that you don't have to remove the wheels to change pads.

I suggest that you shop JensonUSA.com, Pricepoint.com or Chainreactioncycles.com if you want to save a few bucks. You may have to work with your folks for a credit card to buy them this way but it can save you some cash.

    Good luck!Hydraulic disc brakes?
there are plenty of videos on the the net for that kinda mainanence stuff and it depends a bit on the break but theyre all similar. formula the one disc breaks are great but at i dont know what a reasonable price is for you, formula oro k24 and hayes stroker trail are cheaper.Hydraulic disc brakes?
The brake I like for a DH ride is the Saint set-up from Shimano. I also have a Hayes stroker ride brake and the Avid Juicy 7 brake (more for AM but they work). You can go to Hayesbrakes.com or here: http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Bleed-a Make certain that you have the correct fluid as any other that is NOT recommended will damage the piston rings in the lever and effectively destroy the brakes! Bleeding these is not something you will likely get by yourself the first few times and you will likely make them worse so be patient. Bleeding these brakes will take two of you the first couple times before you can do it yourself. Make sure you get the proper bleed kit with your exact brake too. One kit covers a few hayes products and you will be fine. I generally purchased mine from Pricepoint.com or your local shop (before I worked at PBS) Either way you have a good brake for now, no need to upgrade at this point. Every bike is properly speced' out of the factory with the best part they could get for the lowest price so that the final product is passed to the customer for the lowest price available. Yours is a low end brake for Hayes but good enough...Do not bleed them if you do not have to!!!!

How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?

i have v brakes and i want to upgrade to disc brakes. how do i know if my rim is compatable with this change? How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
Wheels are the easy part... there is a flange on one side of the hub with several holes to mount the disc.

Frame is the hard part... if your frame is not built for disc brake capilers, you can do 3 things- 1) forget putting discs on; 2) find frame adapters for the calipers (though this does not guarantee your frame can withstand the force); or 3) have bosses welded or brazed onto the frame to accept the calipers.

Discs aren't %26quot;all that%26quot; anyway. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
look at the hub; specifically, at what angle (vis a vis the other side) the spokes meet the hub. And the hub should have accomodations for the disc. The rim itself is compatible, but the wheelset is most likely not if you do not know it to be already. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
Your wheel ( hubset ) will be set up for a brake disk, it's either six or seven screw holes on the side of the hub and your frame or fork will have a mounting bracket for the brakes. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
If your bike came with V-brakes, your wheelset might not be compatible. Look for an extra flange on the left side of the hub with six holes to mount the disc to. If the flange isn't there, you're looking at a new wheelset (or at least a new hubst %26amp; rebuild).

Since disc brakes don't use the rim to brake, it doesn't really matter what rims you have. Disc specific rims, however, are lower profile and usually lighter.

You also want to make sure your frame and fork have disc tabs on the left side also, because without disc mounts on frame %26amp; fork you won't be able to mount the calipers. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
Actually, the rim doens't play anything at all for disc brakes. What you need to see is if your hub is disc-brake compatible. On the bike non-drive side on the hubs you should see a place to put 6 bolts. Also, the spokes on your wheel must be 3-laced pattern. What that means, is that they're not radially straight from the hub to the rim, but sort of crossed. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
look at the hub, where all the spokes are connected. most disc compatible hubs will have six holes centered around the axle for the mounting bolts for a disc rotor. more expensive hubs may have a large, splined shaft for Shimano CenterLock rotors. if you do have these caracteristics, make sure also that you fork has the mounts for a disc caliper (right near the axle, you'll see two holes for mounting) and also the same on the rear of the frame. How do i know if my wheel set it disc brake compatable?
if it is then on the left side of the wheel should have a disk mount in plain sight also check the suspention fork som of them come with both v and disc mounts

    Brakes squeaking still....changed them yesterday?

So I changed the brakes yesterday (front disc) because they were squeaking so badly. Well they now have new pads on them and they are still making squeaking noises and it is driving me crazy.

Any ideas how to stop it?Brakes squeaking still....changed them yesterday?
They make a lubricant for front brakes. Go to the auto parts store and get some. It is usually in a very small packet, like a mustard packet and cost a couple of $$. Apply to all the metal to metal contact points on the pads, caliper, etc. MAKE SURE you don't get it on where the pads contact the rotor. That should do the trick. While you have all the parts off make sure you have/do put them back on correctly.

If you still hear the noise after that, you may want to check your front wheel bearings.Brakes squeaking still....changed them yesterday?
Did you rough up the rotors. They may be glazed, causing the squeaking.Brakes squeaking still....changed them yesterday?

Question is way too vague. What kind of vehicle is it, what was the Oe formula for the brake pads, did you replace with the same or just go with the cheapest pads, were the rotors measured and either resurfaced or replaced, was the hardware and caliper slides lubricated, were the wheels torqued properly to spec etc....

    Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?

I have a 2008 ford focus and the back drum brakes are fine but I think if I had disc brakes in the back I would be able to brake better and quicker. If it is possible to change them give me details please. And, if I need to pay a car parts person to do it how much do you think it would be?Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You can have it done for around three grand. Rotors, pads, hoses, brake cables, abs sensors, master cylinder, proportion valve.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You would have to switch over to a rotor and caliper setup, so you will have to buy two rotors and two calipers plus pads and labor, the cost would vary from state to state and even city to city, but if you are stopping fine now, why change? Put your money into something else.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
If you really wanted to enhance your braking power a lot, you'd have to get a better suspension, and sports designed front rotors. just changing the back to disc won't help as much as this cause the front brakes do most of the work. and if you make the rear brakes too aggressive, the tires will just skid.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
You can switch them out. Disk brakes require 2psi back pressure and drum need 10psi. You will need a regulator or a new master cylinder to do it. It will not be cheap!Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
the conventional (service brake) supplies 80% of the power to the front wheels. so i dont believe swtiching to read disc will hepl you the way you think it will. switch to cross drilled or slotted rotors and creamic shoes. its cheaper and it will suprisingly decrease you stopping distanceDrum brakes to Disc Brakes?
I think it is not a good idea to exchange the brake due to these days they built with anti block brake system, it may not work right after you change it, but you still can do it by to buy the whole disc brake assembly from the dealer parts dept., make sure you have the axle brake mount with 2 bolt threaded ready for disc brake, I believe if you do it yourself with parts estimate roughly $1,500.00 and if dealer do for you is around $3,000.00Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
Yes you would get considerably more braking power. Check the internet in such places as JC Whitney. For the inexperienced or shadetree mechanic, they make a complete conversion kit that supplies everything needed part and detailed instructions to get it done.Drum brakes to Disc Brakes?
Really its not worth it, you will not notice any difference if any, in stopping power, majority breaking power is in the front. The ratio is about 70% front and 30% in the back,Unless your vechicle has a heavy load in the back its pointless ,when you have more than enough braking force in the rear with drums for that compact size of a car.If it was necisary all cars would have 4 wheel disc, but its not, only the front two are required.

Its real easy to change brake pads in a car, but it does very from car to car, you can pick up a book at any auto parts store that is a repair manual for a specific car. You can even get an online service for about 20 bucks a year via alldata that is searchable and has pictures.

This will also tell you exactly what you need to do the job.

    on disc brakes you

    - lift the vehicle and secure it on jack stands

    - remove the wheel

    - remove the caliper (usually a 3/8 or 1/4 inch hex adapter)

    - remove old pads

    - use a c-clamp to compress piston

    - apply an anit squeal lubricant to the back of new pads

    -reinstall in opposite order

(Mine are disc brakes not drum brakes).

Thanks. How long do brake discs last for?
You'll be fine using existing discs providing they are in a servicable condition, you would be better to have a qualified mechanic take a look, brakes are so important....

disc's can last at least three sets of pads before they need changing. i work in garage in spain over here they dont change discs until they can slice meat, it's not the best thing to do!!How long do brake discs last for?
If you change your pads before they wear down yes this will stop them damaging the disc.

If you take the wheel off your car and run your finger from the inside of the disc to the outside of the disc and feel no rdieg at the outer edge then your disc is ok. If there is a ridge at the outer edge of the disc you want to query this. If you are not that familiar yourself with brake systems most garages do a free brake inspection, they will be able to tell you if you require new discs.

A disc can also be warped, you would usually notice this by a chuffing noise when driving along, braking or a slight wabble on your steering under braking.

Hope this helpsHow long do brake discs last for?
i change my pads every 3000 miles. but you dont have to. when the pads start squeeking it means that tey are worn. if you see grooves on the discs that means that the worn pads is digging into them. How long do brake discs last for?
it all depends on how you use them really. Some people ride the brakes allot and others don't do that at all. You will be able to tell when you need new brakes and if you do need new ones you have to do both sides. There is no getting around just doing one side but you can do the front say one week and the next week doing the rear. That is if you cant pay for all four at the same time. You can call around and see who in your area can look at your brakes for fee and your router as well to see how they are and you can do this as often as you like the service is free. So have them checked ever so often its safer then just waiting tell the pads are gone and you also need to replace your router at the same time and trust me having a place do it is allot of money later. So take care of the brakes by having them checked out for free at a place near you.How long do brake discs last for?
Hi no you dont always have to change your disc's run your finger on the face of the disc starting near the middle and working to the edge if there is a bump then your discs are worn and will need either re- facing (grinding the disc flat) or replaceing, if the disc has a blue tint to it it means there has been to much heat on the disc and it needs changingHow long do brake discs last for?
Preventitive maintenace is key to avoiding break failure. If you own a car, sometimes there is a painted area of your pads that indicate you need to replace the pads or a metal prong that will make your breaks noisy when its time to replace them too. If you own a motorcycle, there is a ridge that will become thinner. You may get 75,000 miles from your discs if you change you pads often and do alot of freeway miles.

Ducati MechanicHow long do brake discs last for?
The life of the brake parts can depend on your driving style, if you are hard and late braker for example you can expect the pads to have a shorter life than if you are a smooth progressive braker.

Your discs and pads can last for years and I'm talking ten years or more, I got that out of my last car. Pads are more likely to wear out than discs. It is ok to change the pads and continue with the same discs.

Modern cars will have some sort of warning that the pads are wearing either an electronic light or just a spring arrangement that rubs on the discs and makes a noise to alert you when wear is setting in.How long do brake discs last for?
Wear on brakes varies according to the type of car and the type of driving involved. You should always change the pads before they reach the point where the metal section touches the disc. On most modern cars there is some sort of indicator, a simple one being a small metal piece which makes a noise to warn that the pads need changing. The discs usually wear at a much slower rate but need to be inspected for score lines/ridges on the shiny part of the disc. Also the part of the disc where the pads make contact will wear and this will show because it creates quite a ridge on both sides if it. Brakes are not for the unsure mechanic and I advise that you have them inspected at a local garage. If you ask them, most small garages will allow you to watch as your car is inspected. How long do brake discs last for?
when you have your brakes serviced, always have your rotors (disc) resurfaced to ensure a nice, flat surface for your new pads... a typical rotor can be resurfaced up to 3 times depending on how much it has been resurfaced... a shop will measure the rotor thickness and make sure it is safe enough to resurface, if it is not, replacement is necessary... easy way to tell if you need new rotors is to feel for deep grooves in the rotor or on the end of the rotor, if you feel a lip on the end, it is replacement timeHow long do brake discs last for?
generally the brake discs or rotors are good for two sets of brake pads. if you have any surging when you are applying your brakes the brake rotors are warped and should be replaced. also if you have any grooves or chips out of your rotors they need replaced. it is possible to resurface the rotors but the cost of new rotors has gone down so much you are better off just buying a new set if yours are worn badly. dont skimp on the brake pads the cheaper ones tend to be more metallic and can be noisy. How long do brake discs last for?
There is always a minimum disc thickness quoted ...look in hand book or ask local garage man...

I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?

you reset it with a computer, take it back and make him fix it,free.

if your car has anti-lock brakes and he didn't open the bleeders on the calipers when he compressed them, that forced the fluid up to the ABS control and may have caused damage.

take it back he didnt reset it right,I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
bring the car back and have him clear the computer of the break fault ... you need to learn some about mechanics ... how many wheels did he do ... you should do a pair not one ....you do 2 or all 4 ... doing just one wheel will make the brakes stop un evenly ... you are talking about disk brakes ... a lot of cars have front discs and rear drum brakes .. they work and are repaired very differently ... Find out more about your car and the repairs will be easier and cheaper ... A mechanic who senses you know about cars will not try to rip you off selling you stuff you do not need ....

    Question about changing brakes?

I was following directions from an Edmunds website, and one paragraph said this...

The rotor is that shiny metal disc staring you in the face right now. You can almost see your reflection, right? Get your eyes level with it. If you can't see your face, or at least its general outline, it may mean that the disc needs servicing or replacement. Below, we'll show you how to check this disc for scoring or marring, and what to do about that.

If my rotor is covered in brake dust, will I still be able to see my reflection?

Does a LOT of brake dust mean its time to change my breaks?Question about changing brakes?
A rotor that has been used on a vehicle will be very shiny. There should not be enough brake dust on the rotor to hide your reflection.

If the brake pad lining appears to be the thickness of a 3.5 disc or less, you should replace them.

I would also recommend taking your rotors in and having them checked for thickness and to see if they can be turned, if they are thick enough I would suggest having them machined.

A new rotor or a resurfaced rotor will have a dull silver color associated with them, you will not be able to see a reflection of anything in them.Question about changing brakes?
how thick are the break pads if there are thin then replace themQuestion about changing brakes?
When servicing the breaks, the rotors should always be machined or replaced. Most shops charge (IF you bring the rotor TO THEM) 4$ per rotor to machine them back to flat.

Brake dust is irrelivant if the rotors and pads are in good condition and you don't hear any squeaks or grinding.

If you have no idea what you're doing, please have your brakes done by a professional, I'd prefer to NOT be rear-ended by a do-it-yourselfer.Question about changing brakes?
No, a lot of brake dust doesn't have to mean it's new brake time. Buy some brake cleaner to remove the dust and look at the pads... if the liner is worn to the metal %26quot;screech tab%26quot; then it is time to replace, otherwise, just spray them clean and re-assemble.Question about changing brakes?
You can wipe off the brake dust. Just don't breathe it in. As for if you need to change your brakes, if the rotors feel perfectly smooth to the touch then they're likely okay, providing they're not worn down below the minimum thickness. Brake service centers and most garages have the specifications on minimum thickness for various types of rotors -- and the tools and know-how to measure them. If they're too thin the rotors are not strong enough and they can overheat, warp, crack or even snap off under heavy braking. (Which means you then have NO brakes on that wheel and the car can spin -- especialy on a slippery road surface.)

If the rotors are grooved on the surface they need to be either machined smooth again or replaced with new ones. Again, sometimes they can't be machined because they will have to be shaved down too thin and then they're not safe anyway.

Brake pads. If they're getting down anywhere near eighth of an inch or so they are dangerously low and should be replaced pronto. One sudden stop can strip off the last of the pad material and then it's metal on metal and that's bad news indeed. They won't work right, they'll screech like all get-out, and they'll get so hot you can actually weld a brake pad backing plate to a rotor. Not kidding, okay? Big bucks to repair if you don't crash beforehand.

If you have any doubts at all about whether your brakes are up to scratch or not, take your car to experts and let them have the responsibility of putting things right if needs be. Remember it's not just if they look okay, those rotors must be within the safety tolerance or they can fail very suddenly.

Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?

I have been advised by a friend that a garage should always undertake any brake maintenence as the insurance company may not pay out in the event of an accident.

Is this hearsay or is this the case? I have looked accross the net for an answer but can only find HOW TO guides for people to work on thir own brakes.

I spent a year working at a garage but that was back in 2005 and I want to know how the ground lies nowadays.

Cheers. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
dude by the same token, some shops shouldnt be allowed to change a flat on a wheel barrow!i wouldnt let em change a dollar.anyway fix your brakes.that is pure bs.

what if you put your own spare tire on and got in a wreck?same thing. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
No, I have been changing my brakes for 35 years. The only way anything could happen is if you really did a bad job and they didn't work because of your fault, %26quot;Gross Negligence%26quot;. Even then how could anybody prove you did it?

If your scared, pay to have it done, if you competent, go for it. Get a book, follow directions, then take the $80 you saved and take out your girlfriend/wife to dinner. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
If you take your time %26amp; know what you are doing. why not. Hey, it's your own ride so go for it.

Get a Haynes Manual or use this site. http://www.haynes.com/products/sfID1/3maIs there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
I think the question is more %26quot;Do I trust my skills as a mechanic enough to change my own brakes?%26quot;. If the answer is 'yes', then get to work. ;-)

In the event of an accident, I think it is more a matter of finding someone to point a finger at (say, if someone wanted to sue) than it is a matter of insurance. Call your agent and see what they say. you may also want to contact your state's insurance omsbudsman's office if you're really concerned. Stuff like that is why you have an insurance omsbudsman. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
you can do any repairs to your own car, that's why %26quot;haynes%26quot; manuals are popular.

The problem occurs if there is an accident and its proven to be some thing you did or changed that is found to be the cause, the insurance company will then not pay out.

The %26quot;classic%26quot; has to be where a car had a crash (no one injured / killed) and the insurance paid out.

The insurance company paid out then sued the person who worked on the car, the person who worked on the car was a friend of the car owner, the car owner told the insurance company all of his friends details.

The friend had written in to a national newspaper asking where he stood, and do the insurance company have a right to sue him.

The answer is yes they can sue, there is nothing he can do other than pay, he should not have done the job in the first place because he is not qualified and as such is not insured to do the job he did.

I don't suppose the two are friends anymore.

So what your friend said in the first place is true, but most people ignore it.Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
You have enough knowledge of mechanics to enable you to complete the repair yourself. There can be little doubt your insurance would be uneffected by doing a home repair.

You will save a lot of cash by DIY. I do it myself without any problem as its a simple enough job with most vehicles. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
Of course you can change your own discs and pads! Otherwise, it wouldn't be legal to sell tools and Haynes manuals, and magazines such as Practical-Classics, which I get every month, would be full of criminal %26quot;how-to-do-it%26quot; guides!

Just be really careful - ANY driver of ANY vehicle, has a legal responsibility to make sure it is ROAD-WORTHY every time it is used - an MOT certificate does not mean that car is legal for a year - it means it passed that test on that day, but you still have to maintain it, and keep it in a safe order. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
You'll have got the message, it's perfectly okay to do the work yourself. The only possible issue is that if you made a mess of it and had an accident as a result the insurers might conceivably say that your car wasn't properly maintained and use that as a way to wriggle out of it. If you do it properly there's no problem at all.

Your friend has a point in that if you're not certain it is indeed best to get a professional to do it for your own sake - you can't afford to make a mistake with brakes. By all means do some research and go ahead if you're confident. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
Methinks your friend is on a different planet. Haynes manuals details brake pad and shoe changing.

Ask your friend to quote the instance where this occurred. Bet he can't because it's a figment of his imagination. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
No you can do it yourself, a lot of people do. Get a service manual if you like ( Chilton or Haynes ) that you can get at the same place you buy your new parts. And when you do the job leave one side together so you have a reference to look at as you do the other side and you'll be fine.Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
your friend is wrong about that.you don,t need a garage but it would be nice this time of year but in the summer just park on a flat surface and start working.i changed my brakes right beside my house. if you have the tools and know-how just start on it. so you might cut your finger, just put a band-aid on and keep working. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
The only advice I can give was that given by my late dad - do the job correctly, be methodical %26amp; check everything you do with a good repair manual ( Haynes etc ). Nowadays it is good practice to take a few digital photos of the correct position of the components in situ before you start dismantling. I have changed the brakes ( pads, discs %26amp; shoes) on most of my cars over the years %26amp; every one passed the MOT test afterwards. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
WHAT A LOAD OF BOVINE EXCREMENT, i have changen my own and all my families car brakes, cylinders, discs, pads, etc for years now, i spent 拢20 on the proper wind back tool ( this does make things a hell of lot easier) rather trying to bodge it ( thinking your car needs pistons pushed back in this manner) as long as you, chock the wheels, jack up and support car on axle stands then go for it, as there cannot be any proof you have not done it your self.

Just rembember to pump brakes before going anywhere then test them a few times to be sure, as for the 拢50 - 拢100 labour charge keep it in your pocket, the way petrol is going you will need it lol, all the best have fun working on the cars, i do.

  • Servicing my car brakes - how does this tool work?

    Hi,

I've got a MK4 VW Golf. Soon I need to do service the brakes with new discs and pads.

    1) I know I'm going to need a brake calliper piston rewind tool to do my brake change, but can you please tell me how this tool works?

    http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_inf

All I can see is a little square thing... can't work out how it would push the calliper back.

    2) Also.. would this be a better tool for the job? (At least I can see roughly how it works in principle)

    http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_inf

    3) And finally (sorry)... is this for a different aspect of servcing the brakes, or is it another calliper rewind tool?

    http://www.toolsnstuff.co.uk/product_inf

Thanks if you can help a bit. :)Servicing my car brakes - how does this tool work?
The first 2 are for REAR disc brakes. The front disc calipers just needs to be pressed. The rear disc brakes calipers needs to be pressed AND twisted. If you try to just press the rear disc brakes (without twisting them), you will break them (as in DAMAGE THEM).

The first tool is UNIVERSAL in that there are 6 sides and each side fits different kind / make of rear disc brakes. Trust me when I say, THEY SUCK. You have to twist them (using a ratchet wrench) AND press hard with your wrist and arms.

Get the second kind. You'll thank me later.

    ===

The third kind is for high performance caliper that has multiple calipers (on both sides of the disc). With those kinds a regular cheap C-clamp type don't work.

    Good Luck

Number 2 is the best tool for spinning in your rear calipers. number 3 is for calipers that don't have to be spun in. you shouldn't have to get No. 3. You can use a big crescent wrench or a small pry bar to get the front pistons to retract.Servicing my car brakes - how does this tool work?

How do I replace the wheel studs on my 2004 Dodge Durango?

Apparently when I had a tire place rotate and balance my tires they decided it was a good idea to use an impact gun on my tires and cross-threaded the lugnut to the stud. When I removed the lugnut to change the brakes I found this and now I know that I have to replace all 5 studs and lugnuts.

Ummmmmm and this has what to do with a computer? If you are going to replace your brakes go buy new breaks and a good repair manual. Then start reading the manual, follow the manual when disassembling the brakes paying close attention to how things come apart. put the new brakes on and reverse the process.

It all depends on where do you get it changed from. If you want to do it on your own, I will suggest you to buy pads from a standard spare parts shop which should cost you about 拢40 and that's it. If you want to get it done from a local mechanic, he can charge you upto 拢20 on top of it. If you are getting it done from an Autocentre then they will charge you around 拢100(including everything).

I will suggest not to use places like Kwik Fit, Nationwide Autocentres or any other express repair shops. they just charge you loads for nothing.

So best is to get it done from a nice autocentre which charge you a little bit extra from a local mechanic and lot less than Kwik Fit type of centres and gives you 1000% peace of mind.

Shop around and see who gives you best service and guarantees the service.

For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?

Just trying to decide if I should change over to a disk setup. I know that big industrial trucks such as dump trucks and buses use drum brakes.....and I know that most race cars use disk....for cooling purposes....but the new tundra just came out with 4 wheel disk brakes. Will it make a large difference for me to upgrade? Is it worth the upgrade? How much more useful with this be for me?For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
The front brakes do 70% of the vehicle's braking. Disc brakes provide more stopping power than drums, which is why you typically see front disc and rear drums. For normal driving, you do not need rear discs because that much stopping force in the rear of the vehicle is not necessary. Discs do have some advantages over drums however, especially for the offroad driving you are talking about. Drum brakes will collect mud and debris in them and it will get between the drum and shoe, severely decreasing the stopping power in the rear. Also, after a day's offroading, water that gets caught in the drum can cause rust (especially if you don't let it sit for a day or two) and can make the shoe stick to the drum and can be difficult to break loose. If you have a big heavy truck that you drive a lot, including a lot of offroading, discs are a good idea. If you do go to a rear disc setup, I suggest you use a proportioning valve for the rear so that you can reduce the fluid pressure to the rear. If you have equal brake pressure to the front and rear discs, the rears will lockup and you'll lose control. Plumb an adjustable proportioning valve into your rear setup and you'll have no problems.

(Dump trucks and buses can use drum brakes because the drums are much larger and have proportionally more friction material than regular car drums do. These larger commercial vehicles use an air actuated system instead of a hydraulic [fluid] system.) Hope this helps. For a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
Disk are much cheaper to make and it's a selling point, however only 10% or less of breaking is done with the rears unless your drifting, so if really makes no differance although all the heavy duty axils come with drum and if your off roading braking is the least of your worriesFor a large 4 wheel drive off road application truck, is it better to have drum or disk brakes?
disk all the way...drums were great when they were invented..in the early 1900s but why would anyone want them now? it will cost 1000 to 2000 to switch...trade for the truck u want...

I'm going to attempt to change the brake pads on my 2004 Sport Trac. I have completed two brake jobs in the past, but had a friend with me who used to be a mechanic. I know both have front disc brakes...please help.Does anyone know how to change the brake pads on a 2004 Explorer Sport Trac??
Both vehicles are fairly straight forward. I would buy a Haynes type manual or go to the Ford dealer and see if they will photocopy the shop manuals. Be careful with the Sprt Trac beacuse if you turn the steering without the engine running(as we do with most front brake jobs) it will get an air pocket in the steering system that will have to be bled out or driven until it bleeds itself. If you drive the sport trac with the air pocket in the steering system it will appear fine until you get to the highway and go around a bend at which time it will shake so violently you will think a wheel has fallen off. Trust me it is not fun. I suggest going to a shop that has free brake inspection re check your work and I suggest to buy a good torque wrench and tighten the wheels to spec. Changing REAR brakes on Frontier 2006 - disc?

Ok so I did the fronts last summer, other than a few bolt removal issues - no sweat.

Friend tells me, OH the backs are even easier.

    NO!

I can't pull the rotor. Just figured out that there is an E BRAKE inside this rotor apparently?

So when I picked up the parts, I got the pads and the rotors, but not sure what I will need once I get inside?

    The problem:

I can't pull the rotor off. It seems like the rear rotor is 'stuck' to the ebrake or something. The ebrake is OFF.

There is a hole in the rotor where maybe you would stick something in to release the ebrake but can't figure out how.

I pryed at this rotor for over an hour...I'm afraid I could have damaged or bent the ebrake components now!

HELP!Changing REAR brakes on Frontier 2006 - disc?
There is a mounting screw on the front of the rear rotor that must be removed before the rotor will come free. Also.. you will most likely require a piston reset tool for the rear brake. Its fairly easy to reset the piston on the front brakes but the rear ones can be a *****.Changing REAR brakes on Frontier 2006 - disc?
If you don't need to replace the parking brakes, don't. When you replace the pads on the rotor you need to remove the brake caliper, pull out the old pads and damper springs then squeeze the hydraulic caliper piston back into the caliper. When you change pads start from the right- rear wheel first then go to the left - rear wheel. This method is done because of the elimination of air in the brake hydraulic lines when replacing the pads. This is sort of an Inverse bleeding process.

are the threads stripped?? or is the head stripped??I have a Stripped hex screw on a brake caliper...How do I get it out???
I'm not certain about Cadilacs, but alot of those clipers have Torqx Head screws, not Hex, if this is the case you coould have striped it trying to use a Hex. Anyway, you may need an extractor bit. the y have many different kinds, the best for you will be the kind that has wide reverse threads that set along the outside of the head and remove it like that.I have a Stripped hex screw on a brake caliper...How do I get it out???
There are special drill bits for that, but since you'll need to put another screw in afterwards, I would look for a replacement part from a car wrecker. ~I have a Stripped hex screw on a brake caliper...How do I get it out???
it should protrude enough for you to be able to get vice grips on it...but when you go back with it buy a new bolt...they have them at the auto parts store.

Been there done thatI have a Stripped hex screw on a brake caliper...How do I get it out???
If the head is stripped, use a screw extractor. You can buy them at any hardware store and you just drill a hole into the head an the screw extractor will thread in counterclockwise and lock to remove the screw.

If it is a protruding head screw use a pair of good vise grips.I have a Stripped hex screw on a brake caliper...How do I get it out???
I would weld a 1/4 inch nut on the hex screw and turn it out then replace with new. If you don't have access to a welder you could try JB Weld it is a 2 part epoxy that you could use to adhere a nut to the screw. In both cases be careful not to weld the screw to the caliper.

How do you bleed the brakes in a 1977 Motorhome / RV?

I have a 1977 GMC MIDAS motor-home, and I am having a hard time with the brakes. It has 4 disc brakes. I changed the front pads, and calipers on both sides. I tried bleeding the lines but the pedal is still really soft. I have to push the pedal all the way down until I feel brakes, and that's with new pads and calipers. The rotors do not looked warped. I read something about turning the wheel to both locks to engage the pump or something? I tried everything, I think it may have a brake power boost system. I did add brake fluid to the master cylinder because it went down after the bleeding process, which I hope was what I was supposed to add. Anyone have any ideas, or somewhere that the proper bleeding process is described for this vehicle? How do you bleed the brakes in a 1977 Motorhome / RV?
it still has air in the system

get a friend help you out

have him pump the break five times or more and tell him not to release and let his food press down on the break.

loosen the bleed valve on the caliper a quarter turn and tighten it once the fluids come out

repeat the process like three times or until no more bubbles come out of the bleed valve. do it in all four wheels,,

,*****watch out for the fluid level on the reservoir if it runs out while your still bleeding the system you're gonna have to start all over again*****

    hope it helps

    good luck
