I have a suzuki swift sport, and it has done roughly 14k miles..
I have noticed that the brakes tend to sqeal if I either brakes lightly or very harshly......
Is sqealing brakes a sign that they need changing?
How can I get rid of the sqeal?

Nowadays it's the pads that last for ever and the disks wear out, ever since they took the asbestos out. However 14 k is not very far and I would expect there is a build up of brake dust causing this. It doesn't necessarily mean that the pads are worn, but it can do - have the brakes inspected at any local independent garage if you don't know what you're looking at yourself.
At 14,000 miles, it shouldn't need new pads unless you've been very heavy on the brakes.

They may need replacing - you can only tell by looking at the thickness of the linings which hould not be much undr 2 - 3mm.

I bought a new Malibu and it squealed at 2k miles. This is how I fixed it. Go to your favorite parts store and get a spray can or bottle of brake squeal preventer. Dry weather with lots of dust and dirt can cause squeals - just check them for wear. 14k miles seems a relatively low mileage.
