Full suspension bike question?

i bought my first full suspension bike w/ disc brakes, i didnt get the manual to see about the maintenence of it, how do i maintain the springs %26amp; change the breaks? also they have quick release how do i take off the rims? i know how to do it on my hard tail but i never dealt with disc brakes beforeFull suspension bike question?
Go back to the place of purchase and get the manual. If they don't have it, return the bike. It is Federal law that manuals be supplied with new bikes.

Discs are precision things and you really shouldn't play with them on your own unless you know what you are doing after someone else shows you.

Quick releases are simple things, and their operation should have been explained to you at the shop where you purchased it. I STRONGLY recommend that you don't attempt to remove the wheels until you are shown how to use them since it is easy to use them incorrectly and place yourself in danger.

If you got the bike from a discount store, well, why do you think they call them discount stores? No service and no professional help along with a mediocre product... but hey, you saved money, right?

%26quot;There is hardly a thing in this world that one man cannot make a little cheaper and sell for a little less than another. It is the person that considers price above quality that is this mans lawful prey.%26quot; Moral- You Get What You Pay For.... talk is cheap, advice is free.

Ford fiesta mk3 n reg?

trying to change the front wheel bearing. got the brake disc and caliper off and am now stuck.cant get into bearing, seems to be a rotor thing in the way , how do u get this off, tried hitting it with hammer but no luck. any ideasFord fiesta mk3 n reg?
I'd seriously consider getting a garage to do it because you sound like you don't have a clue and i wouldn't want the wheel to fall off and kill you or someone else.

To do it properly you need to undo the driveshaft nut, the bottom balljoint ect and completely remove the whole hub assembly to work on it at a bench.

1999 Ford Expedition ABS light?

I own a 1999 Ford Expedition with a 4.6L, it is 2wd, and has 4 wheel disc brakes. The other day when i was backing out of the drive way the ABS light in the i nstrument cluster came on. So the next day i jacked it up and checked the brakes on the front, they were worn so i changed them and hoped the light would go back off and it didnt. What would cause this warning light to come on and what do i need to fix or change to make it go off or do i just need to reset it some how? thanks in advance for your help1999 Ford Expedition ABS light?
Yes, U do have to reset it, any shop with an ABS scanner can do it for U,

ask 'em 2 read a code for U, probably its a sensor, but U got 4 sensors, so its good to know which one1999 Ford Expedition ABS light?
The ABS light came on because there is a problem with the ABS system. Could be the ABS computer, or one of the sensors on the brake calipers.1999 Ford Expedition ABS light?
usually the rear sensor goes out on the rear end, but need tester to erase codes to turn light off

15" to 17" alloy rims?

I drive a 1.6 litre car with 15%26quot; rims. If I change to 17%26quot; rims, how will it affect the performance of my car? Also, do I need to upgrade my disc brakes?15%26quot; to 17%26quot; alloy rims?
They should fit with no trouble, however your Tires will be pretty expensive and not give you much milage as the stock wheels and tires it came with.

You will notice much better handling/road holding from the new wheel/tire combo, but you will also feel every rough spot in the roads you drive...and once the rains come along it might be a little slippery...

No you dont have to modify anything in regards to brakes, BUT better brakes are always a great thing to have!

Best wishes!15%26quot; to 17%26quot; alloy rims?
Your ride quality will probably suffer.

Chances are the 17 inch wheels will weigh significantly more. Assuming you're going to the same size tire, the sidewall will be much shorter, but the actual rim itself will be much larger, and the spokes longer. Part of what determines how smoothly a car rides is the ratio of sprung to unsprung weight. Unsprung weight is everything that is on the OUTSIDE of the springs/shocks. That means wheels, brakes, bearings, and part of the weight of the suspension components and drive shafts. The more that stuff weighs, the more the springs and shocks have to work to dampen the motion caused when you hit a bump. Thus you feel it in the passenger compartment more. Also, your suspension components will wear out faster.

This weight will also (perhaps unnoticably) affect your acceleration. Because you will have more weight to get spinning (and ALL of it is added at the outside of the wheel, where it's hardest to get spinning) it will take longer to get up to speed. You probably won't notice, but it'll be there. Oh, and the added gyroscopic effect of all that extra spinning mass could affect cornering, too...but again, you probably won't notice.

Oh, and you'll see a decrease in (city) fuel economy from the extra energy you have to use to get the wheels spinning. Again, probably too small to really notice.

Also, with a shorter sidewall in the tire, there is less tire to absorb impacts. This also results in a harsher ride. There being less sidewall also means there is less flex in the tire as you corner, which would result in crisper cornering. So it isn't all bad.

Upgrading your brakes wouldn't be a terrible idea, since you've got that extra rotating mass to stop. Also, you have more room for brakes now. But it probably isn't necessary.15%26quot; to 17%26quot; alloy rims?
you will get better fuel economy but reduced pickup, the handleing feels much better, don't worry about brake upgrades15%26quot; to 17%26quot; alloy rims?
The problem with upgrading rims is that, you are more prone to kerbing them -which looks nasty and can cost quite a bit to repair- and also, the can lead to less grip whilst cornering and ruin the drive of the car. I have read about someone who decided to upgrade his rim, and this is what he thought of the result

How badly is my car damaged?

I need to change my brakes soon. Im worried about the condition of my from drum discs though.

The ones on the back are smooth. The ones on the front are also smooth but they are wavy (bumpy). How bad is that?

He said I was suppose to be hearing scraping noises when braking. I took the car out today to purposely try to see if I would hear scraping.

Theres a slight scraping that happens after I let up off the brake. The thing is I also hear that noise when I hit a bump.

Its very faint.

Got any Suggestion? How badly is my car damaged?
Your brakes need to be serviced, but your not in too bad a shape. Have the drums and/or disc turned, and if they are out of spec replace them (thet will fix the wave). But dont let it go too long, because it sounds like your pads are nearing the end, and if they get to metal and metal you will just be destroying the parts, which will require everything to be replaced (and have a definate impact on your braking abililty). How badly is my car damaged?
get the rotors resurfaced..duno how much they charge there but here its like 10 bux for each one..but if theyre really warped ur just gonna have to get new ones...gonna be liek 30-40 bux each..+installation..with new rotors..shouldnt cost more than 150 installedHow badly is my car damaged?
I can't see them, but it sounds like time for rotors to be replaced or at the minimum, turned! How badly is my car damaged?
Im sure the brake shop can get them resurfaced for you, but if its bad enough you might just have to replace them, it won't be that much so dont worry. To get my rotors replaced on my Honda it is around $120-$200 for all 4 wheels depending on the kind of rotors i needed. not that bad, it happens eventually anyways. How badly is my car damaged?
Hi novatrek Sounds like you will definitely need brakes soon!If you can feel and bumps or waves they will have to be machined or replaced. The rotors have gotten real cheap for most cars recently so it shouldn't be a huge difference. Are you going to do them your self? HAVE A GREAT DAY!How badly is my car damaged?
Rotors can be remachined for around $10-15 each but it is usually not recommended. They are thick to help them transfer heat from braking. If you have them machined thinner than they can't get rid of as much heat and can warp a lot easier and cause a shudder in the brake pedal.

New rotors can be anywhere from $12-100 each. Go to www.autozone.com or the website of a local parts store and look them up. If the rotors have the wheel bearings in them you'll need to regrease them and replace the wheel seals as well. Many just slip onto a sealed hub though.

You only hear scraping if the pads are worn extremely. Sometimes the metal tab breaks off so you should visually check the thickness of the pads anyway. Often the insides wear faster...anything less than 1/8%26quot; thick should be replaced. A set (for both wheels) of new pads can cost from $15-120. I usually buy the middle range semi metallic ones or ceramics. The ceramics don't have as much dust and are quieter. I'd expect them to be $35-65 for a set.

Your uncle isn't that far off. If you took your car to a shop like Midas they would double all of those prices and charge labor too. A brake job from them is often $300-500 by the time they are done with you.

My wife's coworker recently took her GTP to Midas. They quoted her $900 to change the fuel filter, replace a tie rod end and alignment, and replace the front brakes. They put a fuel filter on it but it didn't do anything...the pump was bad so they told her $500 to fix it. We paid them $75 for the diagnosis and filter change and then drove it to Autozone. I put two new tie rod ends on it, new rotors and brake pads, new fuel pump, and fixed a leaking hose. I charged them $175 for the labor and everying (including an alignment at Sears) was under $700.

  • Can a 15 year old work as a mechanic, or is there an older "legal" age?

I'm wondering this, because, guess what? Summer's here. I'd like something to do over the summer that will earn me money, instead of costing money. I'm going to be 16 at the end of summer (Sept. 2nd). Honestly, right now, a job is a job. I'd be lucky just to get any job at all. But I want to know if I could get this type of job, because it would be more money, it would probably be more fun, and i already know well enough what I'm doing ( well, enough for a simple job, like the kind at Big-O, or Jiffy-Lube, etc.). I know how to do the simple things.

    -change oil (duh).

    -rotate tires.

    -mount and dismount a tire.

-patch a tire (unfortunately not plug...)

-I have done drum brakes, but not too fond of them.

-disk brakes. those are so friggen easy, I think most mechanics could do them with their hands behind their backs ( slight exaggeration).

-I have changed a McPherson strut, but only once.

I'm sure there's more, but the point is, simple things along those lines. Is it legal for a 15 year old to get a job in this field, or should I just wait till I'm 16? I know that 15 (or even 14) year ODs can do most simple jobs, but not ones considered to be %26quot;hazardous%26quot;. Is this one considered to be %26quot;hazardous%26quot;? I don't see why it would be, if all of the safety rules are followed (as with everything, safety rules were the first thing I was taught). Can a 15 year old work as a mechanic, or is there an older %26quot;legal%26quot; age?
I doubt that you could qualify as a mechanic no matter how much experience you have. It depends on the state you live in, but most won't let you work in that type of environment. One way to find out is to call a lube place or some other place where you think you might want to work and ask them. You could also stop in and ask, but you might feel more comfortable calling and you can save yourself the trip.

I have a Fiat Seicento and while changing the front wheel one of the bolts which holds the wheel on sheared?

Now I only have 3 wheel bolts in. They aren't nuts which fasten onto studs but are bolts which screw into the part that the brake disc is fastened to and which I don't know the name of .I'm more worried about how difficult/expensive it will be to get the broken bolt out than driving on 3 bolts Any ideas pleaseI have a Fiat Seicento and while changing the front wheel one of the bolts which holds the wheel on sheared?
Yep, did the same to my mates pug GTI. Take it down the mechanics they'll drill it out for a couple quid then its just the cost of the replacement. You should be fine taking it at low speed with three bolts till you get to there.I have a Fiat Seicento and while changing the front wheel one of the bolts which holds the wheel on sheared?
Fix it as soon as you can, and keep an eye on it until you do. It's just a matter of having a mechanic drill a hole in the broken bolt and extracting it with an easy out, and then putting in a new one. Shouldn't be terribly expensive.I have a Fiat Seicento and while changing the front wheel one of the bolts which holds the wheel on sheared?
With the wheel off you might just have enough of the broken bolt left to unscrew with a pair of vice grips. The part its screwed into is the hub, hope this helps,

I cut through one brake rotor...?

So yeah. The guy who had this car before me apparently replaced 3 out of 4 rotors when he got the brakes changed(don't ask me why, ive wondered about this for weeks). Anyway, for a while that one rear brake rotor would just make the grinding noise consistent with a warped rotor, and today well. today after a *clunk* my brakes came back up to standard pressure, and the noise ceased. I pulled over, had a look, and lo and behold... no more disc part of the rotor, just the hub. I suspect im in danger of losing fluid, but since the pads on there are fine theyre just squeezing a hunk of the rotor. whats the prognosis? it stops better than it did before, can I just cap the brake line till i have the extra funds to replace that rotor?(spare me the lecture about how i should have done it before, you don't know my financials. ps, its an uncommon luxury car so each rotor is over 100 USD just to buy).I cut through one brake rotor...?
the caliper is bad thats why one wore out prematurely and youll need to fix your brake as this could become very dangerousI cut through one brake rotor...?
well, you should be fine, but that is a common rotor price, and if you have a luxury car be prepared to pay luxury prices, also should be able to do the work your self, it is relatively simple. If you can change a tire you can change a rotor.I cut through one brake rotor...?
if it is on a front wheel i would say to replace it. your car will jerk to the side that has the brake when you apply it. most of your breaking power comes from your front breaks too. i think capping the line would be fine til you get it fixed.I cut through one brake rotor...?
    No don't drive it.

You will cause more damage to the break system and just rack up a larger bill.

Park it until you can fix it.I cut through one brake rotor...?
well if it is a new ish car you should be working on at least split diagonal break lines which means if you loose fluid from one wheel you will have at least 2 that do work for example: the front right goes but you still have your front left and back right working...either way if it isn't affecting your controls/handling on the road when braking or just driving then it should be fine to use....just make sure you can get it to a garage (or do it yourself) as soon as possible to be on the safe sideI cut through one brake rotor...?
Okay, here is some advice for the future. If you can't afford expensive maintenance don't buy uncommon luxury cars. Two you should of fixed the problem when you heard it grinding. what probably happened was that the caliper on that rotor went bad and and started clamping down way to hard when you pushed the brakes. Thus, wearing out the brake pads and denigrating the rotor over time. That brake line can be disconnected and capped. Make sure the brakes are not engaged what so ever. Note make sure it doesn't engage when you pull the parking brake also. Most of the braking is done with your front brakes any ways, that is why your car leans forward when you hit the brakes. This is not an advise able fix and i strongly encourage you to fix the brake as soon as possible and sell the car. You need to buy some thing that you can afford to maintain. P.S. you do need to hear the lecture. suck it up, grow up and do better. Good Luck

Road Wheel on Hardtail MB (Trek 4900)?

I own a Trek 4900 2006 model with disc brakes. Although the current wheels are ideal for mountain biking, I'm starting to enjoy cross country biking a bit more and was wondering if I could buy an extra set of road wheels on ebay or something to swap out when I'm not off roading. Heres a few questions seeking professional advice.

    1. How much would it reasonably cost me?

    2. Is it difficult to swap tires with disc brakes?

    3. Could I do it by myself with the basic tools quickly?

    4. Would the heavier MB frame cause the tires to deflate quicker?

    5. Would I have to adjust the brakes and gears when I change tires or can I just swap out the wheels and be good to go?

    6. Is there really a big difference?

Thanks for any response.Road Wheel on Hardtail MB (Trek 4900)?
I'm not a professional but I maintained my own bikes for the last 15 years so I'll take a shot at it.

    1. To get a set of reasonable quality wheels that are setup to accept disc brakes will cost at least $100 for the rims, $25-$50 for each of the discs, and however much you're willing to spend for the sprocket assembly.

    2. No. In fact I have found that it is much easier to change wheels with disc brakes than with traditional brakes.

    3. You can do it with no tools if the rims have a quick-release nut, otherwise it would only take a couple of adjustable wrenches. Another option is to take rims that don't have the quick-release into a bike shop and they can install it on them for a reasonable cost.

    4. The weight of the frame might affect how fast the tires deflate, but the bigger issue would be how much you weigh.

    5. No, as long as you have the same size discs and the same number of gears in the back, you can just change wheels and be on your way.

    6. There is a HUGE difference between riding on a road with dirt tires and riding on the same road with road tires. It will be significantly easier to use road tires on a road than try to use dirt tires on a road. The question (to me anyways) is whether or not the benefit is worth the price.Road Wheel on Hardtail MB (Trek 4900)?
Road wheels are bigger than MTB wheels-- Typical MTB wheels are 26%26quot; while road wheels are 700mm (more than 1.5 inches bigger in diameter).

I doubt your Trek 4900 MTB frame will have the necessary clearance to fit the bigger road wheels.

What you can do is buy another set of MTB wheels with the brake discs and a cassette compatible with the rear derailleurs, and put the skinniest slick MTB tires you can find on it (they have those down to 1 inch in width).

However, this will not be cheap and it will not give you much improvement in speed on pavement (about 2-3 mph tops) because of the bike's gear ratios and weight.

Buying a road bike would be the simplest solution. That's what I did (I own both an MTB and a road bike).Road Wheel on Hardtail MB (Trek 4900)?
1st you can't put 700c road wheels on your bike. You need to buy wheels similar to what you have now and run road tires on them. There are many road type tires made for 26%26quot; wheels. You can do this yourself with minimal tools. While I don't know what a reasonable cost to you is, it will be in the $300 - $400 range a least. You will need:

    -disc compatible wheels

    -a cassette

    -tubes and tires

    -rim strips

    -disc rotors

-quick release skewers (not absolutely needed)

While you will be able to change wheels back and forth easily, sometimes the brakes may not quite line up perfectly - on discs that could be a headache.Road Wheel on Hardtail MB (Trek 4900)?
I don't think that's possible. Wheels diameters are different, and that will spoil your set up.

What you can do is buy some slicks and replace your nobbies tires with them to make it simpler.

  • When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?

    i have two questions:

The first check up is done at 600miles, they changed my Oil and brake fluids, checked tire pressure and lubed the chain.

when is the second time to go to get the bike checked?

also, how do you clean your brake discs so that they don't make noiseWhen to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Your oil changes should be at around 3000-4000 miles, and depending on the bike, (using a general figure here) your first tune up and valve adjustments should be made at the first oil change, and every 6000 miles (like I said, depending on the bike) give or take. If your brakes are making noise, have the shop fix them, they shouldnt be, and if its brand new, the bike is under warranty. If your rotors are glazes, or have a defect, the warranty will cover it.When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Never heard of cleaning the disc to stop noise.

I usually chamfer the leading edge of the pads.

Also I spray the back of the pads with an aerosol (available at Pep Boys, etc) that puts a rubbery/plastic coating on them. There are also shims that glue onto the back to serve the same purpose. When to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
depending on where you live you should bring your bike in every spring before you start riding again for maintenance just to make sure everything is running right after the winter make sure there are no clogs or anything of that sort in your fuel, brake, intake lines just as a precaution and i agree with jon if your breaks are squealing or making any sort of noise they shouldn't be bring it in i had my brakes do that because they were too tight and it messed up my calipers which is a lot more expensive to fix down the roadWhen to go for a motorcycle check up/ dirty brake discs?
Brakes can make a noise because of brake dust and road dirt getting on the disc ?you can use a brake cleaner that comes in aerosol form ?it evaporates very quickly and leaves no residue, spray on and wipe off with a clean lint-free rag.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/store

However there are other reasons brakes make a noise ?the most important being that the pads are worn check them to see if there is sufficient material left ?there is often a groove on the pad. Some brakes and calipers benefit from a blob of copper grease (copper has a higher melting point than ordinary greases) between the pad and the caliper pistons (for obvious reasons do not get it on the face of the pad). If the noise is intermittent when you wheel the bike at walking pace you might have a warped disc 撀爐his is expensive as you have to replace the disc (you can skim them but is it worth the risk?). A glazed pad might make a noise and you would notice a reduced braking efficiency, the glazing can be removed with steel wool, but if they are glazing because they are rubbing you will need to have the caliper looked at, if they are glazing because you are constantly applying the brake you will need to adjust your riding habits.

I feel annoying vibrations in the steering wheel when I hit the brake pedal. (it happens ONLY when I hit the brake). Discs %26amp; pads were changed (using EBC turbo groove discs %26amp; pads greenstuff) about 2 months ago. Carrier Tents (sorry I dont know the exact term, I mean the wads that hold the spar) were also changed recently. I need to know what can be the possible reasons for this and what I should look at/check FIRST any help on how to figure out what the problem is would be appreciated thank you.Hyundai coupe 98 steering wheel vibrations when hitting the brake?
One more idea... Often times a rotor that gets overheated by excessive braking will warp and cause a pulse feeling on the brake pedal, if there are worn front end bushings, wheel bearings or steering box problems they will get worse upon braking. The brakes are designed for normal speeds and use, any over use will heat them up.Hyundai coupe 98 steering wheel vibrations when hitting the brake?
Sounds like warped rotors from either a poor resurfacing job or overtightening the lug nuts. Either way take it back and complain because it is their fault!!! Unless you took it somewhere else and had tires put on or if anyone else has had the wheels off since they did the brakes. I have seen this alot from overtightening or incorrectly tightening the lug nuts. A good shop would take care of this for free if you took it back to them. In the future when you have your car worked on and something is different than before or doesnt seem right take it back asap. I guarantee they will ask why you waited so long.Hyundai coupe 98 steering wheel vibrations when hitting the brake?

Im thinking of putting the 360 small block engine in my 1965 dodge dart. One of the people who answered my question mentioned changes I would have to make on the front %26amp; rear suspension, new disk brakes ect...

Can someone walk me through exactly what i would need to do? how much its going to cost?If I were to choose a 360 small block engine, what changes and modifications would i need in my 65 dodge dart?
Well the actual needed changes are small. But the %26quot;want to changes%26quot; are big. You need to change the motor mounts..Schumaker makes em. You may need to change the tranny to a 904 auto. Get the correct throttle linkage. Sure there may be some fuel lines, brackets, etc etc etc that need to be changed. Now for the wants. You may want to upgrade to a beefier suspension, you may want to upgrade the brakes for better stopping power, and may want to upgrade the ignition. It is a straight forward swap if you take your time. Try going to www.moparts.com They will help you out. Very knowledgable. Many have done that exact same swap, many times. Heck they may even be able to post some of there picks. Use them, they are a great resource for EVERYTHING you need or question you have.

How much does a front brake job for an '06 Dodge Charger cost?

I think all it needs is for the brake pads to be changed. There is a little squeaking but very minor so I think the discs are ok. These brakes are high performance brakes that came with the car off the lot.How much does a front brake job for an %26039;06 Dodge Charger cost?
Whatever you do...DO NOT got to a chain brake shop such as Brake Team or Just Brakes, they are thieves and will sell you hundreds in stuff you do not need... you will NEVER get out of their shop with the 99.88 all four wheel brake job.... This I Guarantee... Brake Team out west quoted my brother 1600.00 in brake work, he declined and asked for it in writing, they refused...he took it to a friends shop and they discovered the brakes were brand new, but a caliper pin had broken... Total cost of repair = 7.00 , oh he had just bought the van and heard this noise so he took it in to see what it was, not knowing the condition of his brakes at all...

How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?

I have a Honda Civic 04 DX with Discs in the front and drums in the back. I have changed the brake pads at 60K but I want more info on RotorsHow do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
The minimum machining limits on most Japanese vehicles (at least here in Japan) is inside the rotor itself. It must be removed in order to see it. It generally will say %26quot;Min 19mm%26quot;, or something similiar.

For some reason, people think you must machine or %26quot;turn%26quot; the rotors every brake change, which is untrue. Most rotors can only handle 2-3 turnings (depending on how much material is removed), while some specify no machining at all...simply replace. They should not need it unless they have been grooved, warped, or have some condition that makes if necessary.

Vibrations while braking (usually in the brake pedal itself) can indicate rotors that are out of round, a faulty caliper, or incorrectly adjusted rear drum brake(s). (YES..loose shoes that refuse to self-adjust can give similiar symptoms)

Measurements must be made with a micrometer in several places going towards the center of the rotor if possible. (Go with the smallest reading if it varies). Never with a set of calipers, which can only measure the widest point at the outer edge. (Not accurate, as the edges can flare slightly, and rust can throw off the reading). A wrench is ok in a pinch, like looking thru a junkyard for a decent replacement (if you go that route), but keep in mind, a 19 mm wrench measures slightly over 19 mm.. (.4mm or .015 in. wider) otherwise, to get it over a 19 mm nut, it would be a press fit.

Factory replacements can run a couple hundred dollars, but I'm sure you can find a quality replacement for much cheaper. I'm not familiar with your particular model, but generally Hondas only require tire removal, then brake caliper, and finally the two machine screws which hold the rotor snugly to the spindle to replace the rotor. (Most common with smaller bodied Hondas)

Some require a puller to remove the rotor from the hub bearing (much more expensive)..but, more common with larger models (Legends and Inspires etc..)

Hope this helps...How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
You should always change them if there are any deep grooves in them. Otherwise, use a micrometer to determine their thickness and compare it to factory specs. How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
take one into the nearest autoparts store and have them measure is the best way. Also there is a chamfer on the egde of a rotor look for it, if you do not see the chamfer you are getting really close and definately should have them measured. How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
well when you changed your pads you were supposed to get them machined. they will tell you what kind of condition they are in. if you did get them resurfaced and they shake and feel different you probley will need some new ones. they are not very expensive and easy to changeHow do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
You can sometimes tell when you're braking, you'll feel and hear a light thudding sound every 1-2 seconds, which indicates uneven groove and wear. They can also be too thin, but you'll need a micrometer to check for this (standard width is 19mm, I believe).

Typically, a shop will re-groove them to smooth them out, but this can only be done 1-2 times, then you have to change the rotors.

A garage will give you an inspection for a small fee ($20-50) or an auto parts store will eyeball and measure them for you if you remove the tire. Cost for new pair is $150-250, depending on where you live. To replace will cost you about the same. Good luck! How do i know when i have to replace my rotors?
The minimum service limit for those rotors is 19mm. If there is no ridge on the outside of the rotor (you should have had them machined when you replaced your pads, so there should be no ridge). Try to fit a 19mm or 3/4 inch (the standard equivalent) open end wrench over the edge of the rotor. If it fits, your rotors are too thin and need to be replaced. You do not need to replace them to get rid of a brake pulse if there is still enough material to have them machined.

    2000 honda civic brake leak?

Ok so last week my brake light went on and so I figured out I needed to add brake fluid. So today when I was leaving a started my car and the brake light was on again so I popped the hood to check the fluid and I noticed a big puddle near the front passanger tire. I added the fluid and had no choice but to drive and pray that I would make it safe. What could be the problem, someone told me I might just need to change the disc, how exspensive is that?2000 honda civic brake leak?
The disc isn't involved. Probably a loose fitting or a cracked hose up front, fairly normal. Now, if it is a cracked hose, get both of them replaced.2000 honda civic brake leak?
good news is this is an easy fix . bad news is it needs to be done by a profesional . sounds like you have a leaky caliper . if that is the case you will need to replace the caliper and go ahead and change the front brake pads while you are at it .2000 honda civic brake leak?
it,s not the rotors, the rotors don,t leak but a broken hose, caliper or broken line will. it,s probably the hose going to the caliper has a hole in it.

i have a 1972 chevy truck k20. with power disc/drum brakes. disc front drum back. someone cut my rear brake lines and put water in my brake resevoir. now theres air in all my lines and stuff. how can i get all the air out. i plugged the back brake line and am now bleeding them from the rear. is there any possibilty to getting all the air out or what. how can i go about doing this the best way. and also is it true what i hear about a sbc engine needing backpressure. then how can hot rods and or rat rods run straight headers. is there anything i can do to my carburetor to gain more hp when i run straight header. like change the jetting or something. please all your information is greatly appreciated and needed. engine is a 02 chevy crate engine with a cam and edelbrock 650 cfm carb and edelbrock performer intake manifold. hei ignition by ac delco. and champion spark plugs. and serpentine belt kit. 4 core radiator. o and the truck has no fan and runs 160 degrees all the time.1972 chevy truck k20 brakes and exhaust.?
I hate to say this but you should have it towed somewhere with a pressure bleeder. I say this for 2 reasons. Reason 1 these are your brakes were talking about its the only way to stop your truck so I believe that since you have never done it before you should have a professional do it. And reason 2 every good tech knows that brake fluid absorbs water so if someone put it in your brake system then that's why you should get it pressure bled so they can flush out all the water. Make sure you tell them that there is water in the system and that it needs flushed extra good. This may not be what you wanna hear but its a professionals opinion.

Ford Mondeo MK2 questions on condition and cost?

The ford show room mechanic quoted brake fluid change required and linings - pads / shoes as 20% remaining and discs front worn and brake cable worn.

The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?

I bought a suzuki swift from a careful lady driver in september 2006. It was/still is in good condition. I recently had the tyres changed on the vehicle and when i was in the garage, an engineer pointed out that the front disc pads were looking worn down, he even suggested to have them replaced. I didn't have them replaced because my car was booked in the next day for a service. When the car went in for a service i mentioned to the people at the service desk to check the brakes as the pads were wearing down and have recenlty been squeaking. I just call the garage to enquire about how the service went and they said everything is fine. They said that the front break pads were ok. I am some what surprised and thought that they were going to be replaced. Any comments welcome!!The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
if the garage carried out a service on your car then checking the brake pads comes as standard on a service in my experience from working on cars some times the pads just need abit of cooper grease on them where they make contact with the calliper if you had your tyres fitted at a quick fit or one of them places then they are none for telling people that they needed new brake pads or shock absorbers that's how they make there money scum bags but I'm sure if the garage carryed out the service right they would of told you the brake pads needed changing its in there interest or if they was low they would normally tell you they need changing in a couple of thousand miles or so or in the next service which ever was closest hope this helps take care and remember that brakes are important so if worth getting a second look by someone else if they say they need doing get in touch with the garage that carryed out the service and ask why it wasn't picked up be careful out thereThe front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
the squeaking on the brakes is a sure sign of wear..get them replaced...the next thing is if you don't replace them the metal will be rubbing on the plates or drum.causing more expense later..ask the garage why they didn't change them and next time take the car to a garage that is prepared to listen to you..The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
on the calipers, there are two metal brackets that hold the pad itself, that is probably what is squeaking, they sell the lubricant at auto zone for 1.00 and is fairly easy to put on. about 5 minThe front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
Some break pads squeek. Usually the cheaper ones.Remember you have pads on the back as well that can squeek. I would ge a second opinion though. The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
Yes you definitely need to replace your brake pads. Because you didn't do it before you may even have to replace your rotors. Please have them checked out too. ASAP!!!!!The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
Sounds like there its dust on the brake lining. If they said the brake were fine then don't worry. It seems to me that maybe the original engineer may have wanted to make some money from you.The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
after mark break pads do squeek but should go away after a week or two also theres a warning bolt in most break pads to let you know when your pads need to be replaced take off the front tire and see how much pad is left and that will tell the whole storieThe front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
The squeak from disk brakes are usually caused by a dry metal plate which is placed behind the pad to stop stones and grit. Ask the garage (if they haven't done this) if they would put some copper grease between the plate and pad for you. It takes seconds with the wheels off so it should not cost more than a few pounds. The front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
it might not be the brakes that are sqeeking it could be the suspenions or bearings that could b doing it when u brakeThe front brakes on my car are squeaking. Do the brake pads need replacing?
If your brakes are making noise, they probably do need to be replaced. Under the actual pad material on them is what are called squealers. They look like rivets. They make noise to let you know your pads are worn out. If they wear down to bad they could start eating away at your rotor. And that can be expensive. I would have your pads changed.

Have to agree, it does sound like you have cheap pads. Branded pads shouldn't do this after 2000 miles.Car squeaks when brake applied help! ?
Brakes are not meant to squeek, but if you put the wrong materials together they most certainly will. Semi-metalic pads are hard and if mated to a rotor that does not have a non-directional finish they will squeek. A softer organic pad can be used and this will stop the squeek. If you continue with the matalic pads, center cut a relief in the pads and bevel the leading and trailing edges of the pads. Use a scar wheel on the rotors to roughen them up a bit, this will help the pads to seat into position and lube all of the slide surfaces where the pads contact the carrier. Car squeaks when brake applied help! ?
there's a product from %26quot;permatex%26quot; corp that's called %26quot;disc-brake quiet%26quot; a spraycan that contains a blue chemical, which is sprayed onto the inside of the brake pads, PRIOR to installation. If this simple procedure is not done prior to installation, then some brake squeal will be noticeable. Something to inquire about next time, or else you'll have to pay someone to remove and re-install the brake pads. Just another example of %26quot; if you want a job done right, do it yourself%26quot;Car squeaks when brake applied help! ?
It could be your rotors. The squeaking you hear starts when the little metal piece inside of the brakes starts to hit the rotors. Thus giving you a warning that you need to change your brakes. If you weren't paying attention and it's been squeaking for a long time, then you will probably have damaged your rotors. Get them checked out.Car squeaks when brake applied help! ?

you will only be able to get the front brake rotors from the dealer, only because its too new . if it was like 5years old then maybe you'll be able to get it from your local parts store . just to let you know the yaris has only one size for brake rotor for the front includes h/b and sedan since the yaris came out

If the guy at the parts store is asking you what size its because he does not have a listing for it in their computer system... hence its too new he's just covering any detail because he'll end up calling the dealer, pricing the rotor call you with a marked up price usually anywhere up to 25% above dealer $.Help with size of toyota yaris brake discs?...?

How necessary is the dust cover that surrounds my back rotors?

I've recently been doing some work on my car. Im changing out the back disc brakes. I noticed there was a really rusted out peice of metal that connected to the car just behind the wheel hub and behind the e brake area. I dont konw what its called. But it comes up behind the rotor and pans out and kind of surrounds the rotor. I was wondering if this is a necessary part to replace. It seems like a dealer only item, as ive looked around for it online. My guess is that its only purpose is to catch the brake pad dust so that it doesnt get the wheel rims all dirty, but im not sure. Maybe it also keeps junk from getting into the e brake area from the interior side of the wheel? I really dont konw. But I was wondering if anyone knew the name of this part and could give me advice on whether or not its a necessary part to replace. Thank youHow necessary is the dust cover that surrounds my back rotors?
those are backing plates. they were put there for a reason. they help to keep stuff off the rotors and helps to cool the rotors. How necessary is the dust cover that surrounds my back rotors?
it is called a %26quot;Backing Plate%26quot; and I would leave it on....How necessary is the dust cover that surrounds my back rotors?
It is usually designed in such a way that it also channels air across the rotors to keep them cool. I'd check the local junkyard for a set if the dealer wants too much. Good luck.

I need to know how to tell difference in disc brake mounts on my mountian bike. I am changing to a 8" rotor?

Unless you are downhilling 8%26quot; rotors are a waste of money. Nobody needs that type of power for XC or all-mountain.I need to know how to tell difference in disc brake mounts on my mountian bike. I am changing to a 8%26quot; rotor?
Its not always the mounts which are vital. you'll obviously need the correct mounts for the calliper.

the calliper needs to match the size of the rotor.

IS mounts are holes perpendicular to your wheels.

Post mounts are like holes drilled in you fork lowers.I need to know how to tell difference in disc brake mounts on my mountian bike. I am changing to a 8%26quot; rotor?
Well, unless you have a disc-equipped bike from the 1990's, you won't really have to do anything except buy 1 or 2 8%26quot; rotors and their accompanying calipers and hubs. It would also be wise to check and make sure your fork and seatstay will be able to handle the increased stress loads which a larger 8%26quot; rotor will produce, otherwise they can crack and fracture when riding. If you have a disc-equipped bike from the 1990's, you may need to get a more modern hub, because modern disc brakes have 6 bolts that attach the rotor to the hub. 1990's bikes can have any number of bolts, not just six. If, by chance, your 1990's bike does have 6 bolts, then all you have to do is read the above instructions. Otherwise, get a more modern hub. I hope this helps.

    Disk brakes wearing too fast?

I have a 1995 Dogdge Ram Van where the passenger front side brakes wear out faster than the left front side. I changed the caliper with a new one and bled all four wheels starting from the fartest side and then eventually down to the front right side. After w few months I check on the pads and sure enough the same thing is happening. Is there a manifold that balance the fluid? If so how do I correct the pressure to be all equal.Disk brakes wearing too fast?
Which caliper did you replace? Sometimes a frozen slider will wear faster, and sometimes a frozen caliper will force the other side to wear. Check the pressure at the caliper, Maybe you have a collapsed line or something else causing it.Disk brakes wearing too fast?
if you did all that stuff, then maybe its your master cylinder.Disk brakes wearing too fast?
Worped roter. You can get them shaved at Minikee for cheap. Try that before master cilinder and all that nonsense.Disk brakes wearing too fast?
Looks like a sticky(dragging caliper)unless you have a chewed up rotor on the bad side.....cut or replace both rotors and replace both calipers with rebuilts...flush the system with clean brake fluid before you replace to keep slop and dirty fluid out of the new rebuilt calipersDisk brakes wearing too fast?
Check that you do not have a warped rotor - that will cause them to wear that way (and pull or pulse when you break).

Right near, or under, the master cyl there should be a %26quot;Block%26quot; where the master lines enter and the other lines come out. That is the %26quot;Balancing Block%26quot; for the system.

You can buy replacements (not suggested) - IE: you cannot change the pressure in stock blocks.

Or you can get custom balance blocks that you can manually adjust (suggested) FYI: count the OUT lines and line sizes, that matters.

To adjust the manual blocks find a gravel or dirt road without much (any) traffic. Start with 60% front, 40% rear. Then get up to about 20 MPH, and break until a wheel locks up, look in the dirt / gravel, for the wheel that locked and back its adjustment off until you get all 4 tires locking up at the same time. This can take a while.

The Links below are where you can buy them.

you need to replace the other caliper too. i know it sucks but you should always replace brake components as a set. plus it may fix your problem, also make sure your caliper rails and anything the caliper rides on is clean of rust and dirt, maybe with a wire brush (not the rotor), good luckDisk brakes wearing too fast?

Hydraulic disc brake motorbike help please!?

    hi,

i have a honda CB500s, and whilst driving it the other day, i tried to press the rear brake. it didnt work, and no matter how i pressed the pedal it wouldnt brake. the front did (obviously...).

when i got back, the rear disc was really hot- it scarred my fingers. and the brakes pads are full, but not recently changed. (i.e. they are worn in).

the brake fluid was fine (between upper and lower)

    still is.

i just went to have another look and now it brakes fine. i havent ridden it long enough to see if it gets hot though....

    what is it!?

    thankfull for any suggestions

It's time to rebuild your caliper. It's not tough, just clean and new rubber( 0 rings and dust seal ) be sure to put caliper grease on the piston.

The pain in the butt part is having to bleed the system. I hate bleeding brakes.

With the dust seal and clip off ,pump the brake pedal until the piston comes out, clean, lube and reassemble using a C-clamp to put the piston back in.

If your pads weren't fried before they probably are now after dragging.Hydraulic disc brake motorbike help please!?

I had an old ironhead that did that on the front brake. The piston would lock up from time to time. Not too cool. The caliper needs to be taken off pulled apart for inspected. In my case, the caliper was not salvageable. A rebuild would not do. Hope you're luckier.Hydraulic disc brake motorbike help please!?
It may be that you are riding with your foot on the brake pedal.Hydraulic disc brake motorbike help please!?
The piston in the caliper is binding when things get hot. And disk brakes warm up even if you just riding. On bikes this happens allot because they tend to sit allot over a season and corrosion builds up inside the calipers. The saftest/best thing to do is bite the bullit and replace the caliper assembly.Hydraulic disc brake motorbike help please!?
Sounds like either the fluid return hole in your master cyl is clogged, or there is oxidation behind your caliper's piston seals. If the pads are dragging the rotor will heat up quickly.

    Take it in for rebuild.

  • Do brake squealers damage anything?

I know we are suppose to change our brake pads when the squealers make its sound but isn't that damaging something?

I guess I don't quite understand how the squealers make it sounds? It is this piece of metal on the pads with a certain height right? and it grinds against the disc along with the brake pads when the brake pads are used up/low enough?Do brake squealers damage anything?
Correct. When it starts squealing it means the metal tab is beginning to wear into the rotor. It will cut a deep groove if not changed.Do brake squealers damage anything?
No they do not cause any damage to your vehicle. Most of them brake off just as they begin to squeak and goes unnoticed. You should get roughly two sets of front pads to one set of rear shoes. If your vehicle has 4 wheel disc brakes the ratio will be closer, but your front brakes preform about 70% of the stopping power. Hope this helps.Do brake squealers damage anything?
change your pads and it wouldn't hurt to check your rotorsDo brake squealers damage anything?
    Yeah, change those pads.

No, the %26quot;squealers%26quot; aren't hurting anything. It's just a little piece of metal that rubs against the rotor, but it rubs in a different place than your pads are rubbing, so it's not really important... just annoying.

However, those squealers are telling you that there is VERY little pad left. Pretty soon you will no longer clamping a pad to the rotor when you step on the brakes, but the actual steel the pad is attached to. This will sound VERY bad and be very damaging.Do brake squealers damage anything?
the squealers grind against the rotors when the pads get low.

therefore if you dont change them quick, your rotors are garbage in about 2 daysDo brake squealers damage anything?
The first sounds you hear are a warning...the damage risks increase with use. I had the same problem and didn't have enough money and my mechanic let me know I could drive safely for one more week even with the squeal%26quot;. After Then I risked a big repair bill. and...if I were in an accident and they inspected the brakes...I would be liable for not having safe breaks.Do brake squealers damage anything?
yes you are quite right in how a wear indicator/squeeler works.

and yes it tends to put a small grove in your rotor.

that said, whenever you replace brake pads you should have your discs machined, so any warping or run out that has occured with the old pads is taken away. it will help prevent brake vibrations and further warping/ hot spots from occuring.

many people who just change their pads tend to have brake vibration when braking at around 80km/ph (45mph??)Do brake squealers damage anything?
Yes, they do damage the rotor a little - they dig a thin, circular groove in it. This isn't really a problem, since its a little away from where the pad contacts the rotor, and the rotors really should be machines or replaced with each pad change, anyway.Do brake squealers damage anything?
no,they wont hurt nothing, just annoying, but its a indication for you to get your pads changed.it just rubs on the rotors, reminding you,its time for new pads.

I would definately go with using www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book). This is what most auto dealerships go by when appraising a vehicle. 1) the 993 carrera lasted from 1993-1998. There is no 2006 model. The 2006's are 997s.

    2) Like all 911s, the 993 was a flat 6 motor. There is no v8 911.

    3) Switching a tiptronic to a manual costs about as much as the cars worth. You need new interior pieces, a new tranny, new ECU and new wiring harness.

    Vx commodore rear brakes?

    Hi all

This is the first time i have owned a car with 4 wheel disk brakes. my question is how do i reset the piston in the rear calipers as i need to change the pads, as far as i can see there are no slots on the piston to wind the piston back in. i tried breifly to push the piston back in using a g clamp but didnt want to force it bacause i know it can do damage. any tips will be greatly appriciated.Vx commodore rear brakes?
the only way is to use a clamp use the old pad as a brige across the piston set the g clamp in the middle and screw down evenly some times they are a bit tight remember once you have replaced pad to bed them in so they dont sqeal when you apply the brakes, to do this get car upto speed then apply the brakes slowly

Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?

Ok so I have a 2002 honda Civic Lx that I recently bought like about 4 months ago. When I bought it the brakes were perfectly fine, but I guess I was told that it needed new brakes. So my dad went to go change them for %26quot;new%26quot; brakes. Ever since, my front disk brakes began to squeal after a few times of braking when I'm driving (No I am not a reckless driver so I know how to drive and brake properly). My dad went back to see what's wrong and they told him that its just the kind of metal that is used on the brakes, that they make that noise but work perfectly fine.

So is it just the the kind of metal used for the disk or brake pad that's the reason for all this screeching or is it something else that I am not aware of?Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?
Rock Star has it right. I use %26quot;Disc Brake Quiet%26quot;, in both a liquid application and a spray. you pull the pads, apply the stuff to the contact points on the pad (on the back - do not use it on the points where it touches the top of the caliper!), and reassemble.

The squealing is a vibration that occurs at the pad, and is transmitted up the caliper. The disc brake quiet acts as a vibration dampener to prevent the pad from chattering excessively.

Is it %26quot;the kind of metal%26quot;? Yes and no - certain types of pads that are designed to resist brake fade seem to have a tendency to develop a squeal, but from my experience, it can be a combination of the pad material, the rotor condition, and just plain luck. Why do my Car Brakes Squeal?
at the counter of almost every auto parts store they have small 1 ounce tubes of %26quot;Squeal Stop%26quot;.

Place a little on the metal of the brake pad (Backs) reassemble

By BY squealWhy do my Car Brakes Squeal?
usually cuz there bad or because you have break dust. by brake dust cleaner and spray all of it and then drive to 60mph and slam on breaks. should be straight. or just get brakes inspected for free at any good brake shop.

How do I fix screeching high pitch brakes when braking?

I drive a 1999 corolla with 116,000 miles on it. I recently just replaced the brake pads and after that it started having these high-pitched screeching noises like nails on a chalkboard. I've been researching online and many people say it's the pads, but I've just replaced it 2 months ago. So what's causing this matter? I believe it's happening in my front brakes. I looked at the brakes and there are some brown rust on it. Should I take out the wheels and clean it with a metal wired scrub and some brake cleaning sprays? I know nothing about cars or brakes except there's the rotor part, disc part, and pad part...I took it to the mechanic and he changed the pads, should I change the rotor ad disc too?How do I fix screeching high pitch brakes when braking?

I'd bother writing it up....but you could have figured it out on your own.How do I fix screeching high pitch brakes when braking?
check the clips as well as the brake pads. sometimes those clips will rub on the rotor which will cause that. also pull the wheels and take a rag soak it in brake cleaner and out it on the rotor front and back and spin the axle with the rag on it to clean the front and rear of the brake rotor. try that and if nothing else deal with it.How do I fix screeching high pitch brakes when braking?
its the brake pads that why there are different price for the pads different materials they are made of and some have silencer sprayed on the back of the pads to stop the noise

  • Can some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?

On a Honda Civic or something of the like...

    oil change....

    engine tune up....

    brake job front disc....

    front end wheel alignment....

this is for a school project

My daughter has to list each individual price. I always do it myself, so I have no idea how much it would cost to get it done at a shop. Can some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?
The problem with answering this is that each shop will charge a different part and labor rate.

Your dealership will charge the highest, your local repair shops will usually be 5 to 20 dollars or so different from each other.

Your friend may charge you a 12 pack of beer for his labor on the tune up, disk brake replacement, and the oil change.

I do mobile auto repair and for the oil change, tune up, front brake job minus rotors I would charge 80 dollars for my labor plus parts. Can some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?
The Honda service department will tell you their prices on these jobs. Can some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?
oil change $20-50 depend on the oil you choose

    tune up about $50+parts

    alignment about $80

brakes $60-80+ partsCan some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?
These are standard services any reputable shop can do, stay away from dealer shops, they have too much overhead, and the prices are outrageous!!

You can get a good idea over the phone, on most of these services. Can some one give me an estimate to what it might cost for these services?
A Honda Civic requires a four wheel alignment which would cost $80.00 if no other repair parts are required such as lower ball joints or any of the four front tie-rod ends.

Front disc brake job with ceramic brake pads and anything but off-shore brake rotors $250.00 - $350.00 depending upon the quality of pads and brake rotors.

Oil change with regular non-synthetic motor oil at any new car dealer $30.00. Add another $30.00 for full synthetic motor oil.

A tune up is a scary situation. Worst case scenario $250.00 -$500 if it required plugs, wires, cabin air and engine air filters, transmission fluid change. Add another $150. if the coolant needs to be flushed drained and cooling system cleaned. You may get buy with a set of factory recommended spark plugs if it's new Honda without ignition wires and nothing else needs to be done. In that case $125.00. These prices may sound steep but remember Honda's labor rate and the cost of late model Honda spark plugs.

How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?

Any corsa dealer or auto parts store can tell you the minimum thickness of the brake rotors. That same number is stamped on the inside of rotor hat area outside of the stud flange. As the rotors age this number is harder to see because of the rust and corrosion to the cast iron. You will need a 0-1 micrometer or vernier caliper to measure actual brake rotor thickness. The neat thing about a vernier caliper is you can use the long end as depth mike and measure the thickness of the brake pads from the pad to the steel backing plate.

Be prepared to convert milimeters to inches or buy metric calipers or micrometers. How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
Inspect the pads and see if they have worn down enough to need replacement.

The discs need to be replaced if they have either worn down to their minimum thickness, are heavily scored or corroded on the braking surface.

Places like Kwik Fit or national tyres will inspect them for free if you don't want to mess around getting the wheels off etc.How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
You will need to remove all 4 wheels and do a visual inspection of wear. If the pads have not hit the metal discs, the nit would be safe to just add the new pads. But you should really play it safe and resurface the disc to make sure they are still true. If they are out of round or slightly warped, then you will get a vibration when you apply the brakes. Buy quality name brand pads for the car, not cheap knock offs from strauss or auto zone.

good luck.....How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
if the brakes are squeaking that usually means pads But if this has been making noise for awhile you will most likely need rotors too.

when doing a brake job you take the rotors in to have them cut.

they will take all the imperfections off the rotor a word of advice most auto parts stores charge just a little more for a car rotor and machining it.

so price that rotor before the job is started.

Don't skimp 80% of your breaking is in the front.

and you or your families life may depend on it one day.

Good LuckHow do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
There is nothing more important than your vehicle being able to stop. Therefore it is without a doubt that your brakes are the most important part of being able to drive your vehicle. Anybody will tell you this - even race car drivers will tell you it檚 a lot more important to be able to stop than to have a great amount of power or speed in your vehicle. Yet it檚 funny how our braking systems will often fail us ?especially as this is usually our own fault.

No vehicle will stop effectively with worn brake pads. Nobody wants to go through a wall have an accident because it won檛 stop. So it makes a lot more sense to be able to just touch the brakes lightly and the vehicle does exactly what it檚 asked to do. At the end of the day, it檚 the equipment, not the driver.

It is important to change your brake pads. The reason for this is because you need to get the maximum performance of your braking system by maintaining optimum friction pad depth. If your brake pads need changing you will find that ninety percent of the changes will be to your front pads.

You can check the pad wear for yourself but when it comes to changing them, if you don檛 know what you are doing it檚 best left to a professional who does.

To check the brake pad wear you will need to view the pads from outside the front tire. With most vehicles now days it will be quite visible, and all you need to do is look through the outside of the wheel rims. That way it makes the pads very visible, unless of course they are worn. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the wheel to be able to see the pads. If you are able to do all this, you will notice that the outside pad should be looking right at you and if you look at it from above, you will see that the pad will be pressed against the shiny metal rotor.

It檚 important to note that there are two ways to determine whether or not the pads will need replacing:

    The first is visually.

If you see that the depth of the pad is less that 1/4 inch. You need to replace it, and soon! If you see that it檚 less than 1/8 inch, there isn檛 any time to waste as you are getting really close on damaging the rotor. You need to then do it ASAP!

It檚 not the same on every vehicle, but use it to help you along.

    The second is by ear.

If you are hearing a screeching sound when you put your foot on the break. Not good. You are overdue for a reline. But, if it sounds more like scraping on metal, then I檓 afraid you have damaged your rotors and you need to fix the brakes immediately otherwise you could cause major damage.

Changing your brake pads too soon is much better than changing them too late. That way you will avoid more expensive repairs as well as unsafe driving. How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
At ~3 years old you might be needing discs. They just don't last like they used to. You need to get them measured and checked against the specs. Of course do the pads as well while you're at it

Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???

I have a 2000 firebird (v6) warped rear disc brakes. Also, how important is it to bleed the brakes. On my 90's camaro I never bled them and never had a problem. Please help me out.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no the rotors should come right off. if you don't open up the hydraulic part of the brake system you shouldn't have to bleed them.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
Damn!! I should know this answer, I learned it in class today. My guess is since your replacing the pads and rotors you might as well replace the bearings, I think you have to replace the bearings every 30,000 miles.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
normally, I clean them and inspect them .any, I say any ,mark I replace them ,otherwise they are good. re grease them(repack) and install them.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no, no bearing removal is required, but check for lateral movement, and as far a brakes go no bleeding is not required unless you breach the system,Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
once you get the brake calipers off the rotors will come right off, you won't have to remove any bearings. The brake fluid should by all rights be flushed out every couple of years as moisture gets into the brake system and can cause havock with the ABS system.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
basically speaking.. u should not have to replace the bearing on a rear disc brake assembly, it depends on if u have a top hat design or integral design.. if u have top hat then u just pull off the rotor and replace the rotor and put on the caliper and wheel and such.. also.. bleeding your brakes is very important because your brakes absorb water because they are hygroscopic.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
no...you will not need to change wheel bearings....although if you are going to have the rotors off anyway, you may want to. your brakes should not have to be bled after replacing rotors and pads.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
You will have to remove the bearing to get the rotor off.Pack the bearing with grease before you put them back. You shouldnt have to bleed the brakes.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
on gm the bearing is seperate from the disc.just change the pads and rotors, like you would do on the front.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
No. you don't need to replace them. The bearing almost never goes bad and usually last the lifetime of your car. Replace it if you hear noise from it, like it is not lubricated. Bled the brake only if you remove the tube that goes to the wheel and you lost some oil (on the floor). Usually, to replace a brake, do not unscrew the oil pipe. Before you remove the rotor, insert a crew driver between the pads and push the piston inside the caliper. The pads came loose and with enough space to insert a new ones.Changing rear Rotors and pads. Will I have to change/remove bearings???
A fire bird is rear wheel drive, so you would have to take apart the rearend and remove the axels to replace the bearings. So, you just need to leave that alone. The brakes are pretty straight forward. Pull off the rotors and slide new ones on. rear calipers usually need to be turned in, not pushed in like front calipers. look at your piston face ( the part that pushes on the pad) You should see 2 to 4 indents on the outer edge. these are engaged by a special tool used to turn them in. I've used channel locks as a last resort. Be careful not to rip the boots. You can probably rent a rear piston pusher at autozone. If you dont open the brake line you will not need to bleed them, but it is a good idea to bleed out the old fluid once in awhile to keep it fresh because it does absorb moisture from the air.

How to release handbrake pressure? need answers quick.?

i was changing my brake pads and discs. im having trouble on the rear one. i took off the caliper to change the pads and disc. i put the disc on and the part that holds the pads but i cant get the rest of caliper on. i released the handbrake already but the pump thingy (dont know names) on the caliper wont go in any futher and it can go in a lil bit more. how do i put it back in to put on the rest of the caliper? im gonna be needing this car.How to release handbrake pressure? need answers quick.?
Does it have a cross-shaped design to it? it may be a caliper designed to be turned in. I had to do it once on a 91 prelude. They make a special tool for it, there's no other way really. clockwise to open, btw. Oh, and the name you were looking for, the %26quot;pump thingy%26quot;, it's the piston. Most stock like that are 1 piston, some are 2. Then performance calipers become 4 or even 6 piston. I think someone made an 8, not sure though.

How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?

people tell me that i would know if my car feels like its holding back, but what if i dont know if my car is holding back or not?

because i bought my car used and i dont know how the feeling is supposed to be, but ever since then, i have had my brakes changed beforeHow do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
The brake pads usually touch the rotor a very small amount even when youre not pressing the brake pedal. Most rotors have a tiny bit of warpage to them from use. The best way to tell if the pad is dragging is if you smell the brakes. They will smoke when you park the car, and smell very strong. If youre wondering if one of the pistons in the caliper is sticking while pushed out, it will usually pull towards the side that is sticking. Also, you can tell if the pad wear is uneven between the two sides. There really is no reason why both calipers would be so far extended that you would feel a noticable drag. If that were to be the case though, expect to replace both calipers.

    EDIT -

Throwing water on a hot rotor can warp them. Youll be spending even more money to fix a problem that you didnt start with. Rotors can warp when they are hot and cool down suddenly and unevenly, such as being hit by water standing in the road. If you drive for an hour or around the block, when you brake the car to a stop and get out, the rotors will be hot. Period. The brake pads are stopping a 2000lb or more vehicle by rubbing two pieces of metal together. Theyre going to be hot. Dont throw water on them. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
check for heat after driving for a while. find a small hill. stop at the ape and put it into neutral and see if it starts to roll backwardsHow do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
Take it to a brake shop. Let them tell you by having the your car jacked up on the lift and the tire off. It's safer and usually free. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
The BEST way is to drive the car for 20 to 30 minutes and CAREFULLY throw some water on the wheels. IF the brakes are dragging, the water will steam. Use a small cup and or take a mouthful of water and squirt it on the wheel near the brake. ALSO you can feel the tire near the rim. IF its HOT or warm, take the car to a brake shop. They will check it free. I had a car with the brakes dragging and I had to get New brakes after 10 k miles. You can also take the car in to a BRAKE shop that has FREE inspection, and get their opinion. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
If you are concerned about it %26amp; can't really tell just pull the tires %26amp; look. There should be a small gap between pad %26amp; rotor unless brake applied. Or take your car out for a drive around the block a couple times. Then check rim. A dragging brake will be extremely hot. If pads wore out you would here a squeel from the low brake spring indicator.

All else fails watch for smoke!!!!!How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
the pads shouldnt be dragging,if the calipers are releasing them from the rotors.

MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?

I HAVE CHANGED THE CALIPER TWICE WITH SECOND HAND ONES, CHANGED BRAKE PADS AND DISC IT STILL GOES TO THE RIGHT AND THE WHEEL RIM GETS RED HOT, DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST FOR A BRAND NEW CALIPER ITS FOR A N REG ALMERA 1400 GX AND COULD ANYONE TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENING AFTER I HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
    Check your front wheel bearings...

Loose or bad bearings will cause the car to pull, and the slop will also allow the brake to drag and heat the wheel.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
Never would a bad alignment cause a rim to heat up red hot. You will cure this by changing the flex line on the right side. It's got a restriction, and keeping fluid from flowing back to the master cylinder when you release the brakes. Your best bet is to get 2 rebuilt calipers while you're at it, or at least make sure the ones you have work freely also..BUT DEFINITELY NOT ALIGNMENTMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
I agree with The brake hose holding pressure, its the reason your wheel and stuff are hot after driving,an alignment would cause a possible torque pull but would not get hot.You should change both sides if one is holding pressure the other is next. You should flush brake fluid also, should be done every now and then to keep boiling point down on fluid.MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
A front end alignment means you need the tracking checked and

re-aligned. this will cure the pulling. Keep in mind that your Tyre pressures need to be equal, too. As this can give a similar symptom.

Dr AntonyMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
Could be that you need an alignment, but also, when ur braking, if ur car also turns to the left or right your frame might be broken! Definatly something you should check on!MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY NEED A FRONT END ALIGNMENT!

YOUR CAR'S ALIGNMENT DOESN'T HAVE MUCH TO DO WITH THE BRAKES!!! AND AN ALIGNMENT SEEMS TO BE JUST ABOUT THE ONLY THING YOU didn't HAVE DONE!!!!MY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?
alignment and it can also be as simple as checking your front tire you might need new tiresMY CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT WHEN I ACCELERATE?

Can anyone tell me more about the price to put disc brake?

    hi..

i'm doing XC and sometime cycle in mud and rain

so, i need a disc brake

but i need to change the fork and maybe wheelset

    i can get a scott 100mm fork at 75SGD

and, i need to get a shimano wheelset compatible to disc brake (as cheap as possible) because of some problem

i'm currently using a shimano dual control V-brake lever

1)i don't know if scott suspension is good or not.. please give some advice

2)does anyone know how much is the cheapest i can get for shimano wheelset? (state country currency)

3)do i need to change the lever if i use mechanical disc brake? Can anyone tell me more about the price to put disc brake?
Hi... I don't know how good the Scott fork is, I've never heard of it. Don't go searching for Shimano wheelsets, I think they only have expensive ones (not sure, but I think that they only offer it at XT and XTR levels).

Check pricepoint, they have some good offers on wheels.

    http://pricepoint.com/detail/12001-365_S

This aren't the flashiest wheelset, but they work.

For forks, check RockShox Tora or Marzocchi MX series. Probably from 200 to 300 or so.

For brakes, if you want mechanical brakes, go with Avid BB 7, they're by far the best mech ones.

    http://pricepoint.com/detail/12605-115_A

They're like 65 per brake, so it's like 130 bucks for the pair, but consider something more for cables and manual labor.

Thanks - Matty :DSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Nowadays it's the pads that last for ever and the disks wear out, ever since they took the asbestos out. However 14 k is not very far and I would expect there is a build up of brake dust causing this. IMHO around 40k should be the life of a brake setSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Yes, it is a sign they need changingSqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Its a Sign that the pads are completely worn through and the squealing is metal scarping against metal.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
It doesn't necessarily mean that the pads are worn, but it can do - have the brakes inspected at any local independent garage if you don't know what you're looking at yourself.

At 14,000 miles, it shouldn't need new pads unless you've been very heavy on the brakes.

If it isn't pad wear, the car could just need the brakes stripping, cleaning %26amp; some copper grease applied to moving parts.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
They may need replacing - you can only tell by looking at the thickness of the linings which hould not be much undr 2 - 3mm.

May be able to cure with anti=squeal shims, which go between the pads and brake pistons.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
I bought a new Malibu and it squealed at 2k miles. This is how I fixed it. Go to your favorite parts store and get a spray can or bottle of brake squeal preventer. You will have to remove the brake pads and apply the brake squeal preventer on the backs of the pads and mating brake surfaces.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
not all the time ! sometimes it,s only brake dust. get some brake cleaner and spray the brakes.Sqealing Disk Brakes On Car - Is it a sign that the pads need changing?
Dry weather with lots of dust and dirt can cause squeals - just check them for wear. 14k miles seems a relatively low mileage.

How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?

Ok, my handbrake started to slip a few months ago, as in it didnt grip when i put the handbrake on. I could push the car while the handbrake was on. So we tightened the handbrake from the bolt under the driver seat. after a few weeks the problem happened again, and we tightened it agen, etc etc, it happened agen, etc etc same thing every couple of weeks.

So we change the read DISC brake pads, but i read that the handbrake might be operated by a drum brake on the inner side of the disc?? anyone know if that a fact for EA's or is it a diff model that uses that?

Now that there new pads, i think its tighter, but still, i can push the car with the handbrake is on.

I read on a site there's another way to adjust it, but it didnt say how. I can't find any useful forum posts, so can someone direct me to one or explain how to fix it ??

please help???How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?
From the EA Falcon workshop manual:

The handbrake is operated by a pull-type mechanism located to the left of the steering column. Cables connect the mechanism to the rear brake calipers. The cables operate screws in the rear calipers which force the pistons out and clamp the brake pads onto the brake discs.

    TO ADJUST HANDBRAKE

    (1) Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on chassis stands placed under the rear axle housing. The placement of the stands is important, as the adjustment must be done with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels or axles.

    (2) Release the adjusting nut on the equaliser rod so that both the caliper levers are in the fully off position.

    (3) Start the engine and apply the footbrake 20 times with a minimum pressure of 500N. Stop the engine.

    (4) Tighten the adjusting nut on the equaliser rod until the distances from the handbrake lever tang to the caliper body stop on the left and right hand calipers add up to 6mm.

    (5) Tighten the locknuts on the equaliser rod adjustment.

    (6) With the handbrake released ensure that both rear wheels are free to rotate.

    EDIT:

Heh, about the other question you asked... Okay, granted you can't drive the car to a mechanic, but there are still mobile mechanics available. But I understand what you mean, sometimes it CAN seem lazy to just answer a question with %26quot;Just take it to a mechanic!%26quot;.How to fix a 1990 Ford EA Falcon Handbrake?
Most cars that have rear disc brakes use a drum brake inside the back of the rotor. Where does the hand brake cable go? If it goes to the caliper, the only thing I can suggest is apply the brakes with your foot and then while holding the pedal down, set the hand brake. If it doesn't go to the rotor, it is and adjusts like a regular drum brake.
