How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?

Any corsa dealer or auto parts store can tell you the minimum thickness of the brake rotors. That same number is stamped on the inside of rotor hat area outside of the stud flange. As the rotors age this number is harder to see because of the rust and corrosion to the cast iron. You will need a 0-1 micrometer or vernier caliper to measure actual brake rotor thickness. The neat thing about a vernier caliper is you can use the long end as depth mike and measure the thickness of the brake pads from the pad to the steel backing plate.

Be prepared to convert milimeters to inches or buy metric calipers or micrometers. How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
Inspect the pads and see if they have worn down enough to need replacement.

The discs need to be replaced if they have either worn down to their minimum thickness, are heavily scored or corroded on the braking surface.

Places like Kwik Fit or national tyres will inspect them for free if you don't want to mess around getting the wheels off etc.How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
You will need to remove all 4 wheels and do a visual inspection of wear. If the pads have not hit the metal discs, the nit would be safe to just add the new pads. But you should really play it safe and resurface the disc to make sure they are still true. If they are out of round or slightly warped, then you will get a vibration when you apply the brakes. Buy quality name brand pads for the car, not cheap knock offs from strauss or auto zone.

if the brakes are squeaking that usually means pads But if this has been making noise for awhile you will most likely need rotors too.

when doing a brake job you take the rotors in to have them cut.

they will take all the imperfections off the rotor a word of advice most auto parts stores charge just a little more for a car rotor and machining it.

so price that rotor before the job is started.

Don't skimp 80% of your breaking is in the front.

and you or your families life may depend on it one day.

There is nothing more important than your vehicle being able to stop. Therefore it is without a doubt that your brakes are the most important part of being able to drive your vehicle. Anybody will tell you this - even race car drivers will tell you it檚 a lot more important to be able to stop than to have a great amount of power or speed in your vehicle. Yet it檚 funny how our braking systems will often fail us ?especially as this is usually our own fault.

No vehicle will stop effectively with worn brake pads. Nobody wants to go through a wall have an accident because it won檛 stop. So it makes a lot more sense to be able to just touch the brakes lightly and the vehicle does exactly what it檚 asked to do. At the end of the day, it檚 the equipment, not the driver.

It is important to change your brake pads. The reason for this is because you need to get the maximum performance of your braking system by maintaining optimum friction pad depth. If your brake pads need changing you will find that ninety percent of the changes will be to your front pads.

You can check the pad wear for yourself but when it comes to changing them, if you don檛 know what you are doing it檚 best left to a professional who does.

To check the brake pad wear you will need to view the pads from outside the front tire. With most vehicles now days it will be quite visible, and all you need to do is look through the outside of the wheel rims. That way it makes the pads very visible, unless of course they are worn. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the wheel to be able to see the pads. If you are able to do all this, you will notice that the outside pad should be looking right at you and if you look at it from above, you will see that the pad will be pressed against the shiny metal rotor.

It檚 important to note that there are two ways to determine whether or not the pads will need replacing:

The first is visually.

If you see that the depth of the pad is less that 1/4 inch. You need to replace it, and soon! If you see that it檚 less than 1/8 inch, there isn檛 any time to waste as you are getting really close on damaging the rotor. You need to then do it ASAP!

It檚 not the same on every vehicle, but use it to help you along.

The second is by ear.

If you are hearing a screeching sound when you put your foot on the break. Not good. You are overdue for a reline. But, if it sounds more like scraping on metal, then I檓 afraid you have damaged your rotors and you need to fix the brakes immediately otherwise you could cause major damage.

Changing your brake pads too soon is much better than changing them too late. That way you will avoid more expensive repairs as well as unsafe driving. How do i know if its brake pads or discs i have to change on my wifes 07 corsa?
At ~3 years old you might be needing discs. They just don't last like they used to. You need to get them measured and checked against the specs. Of course do the pads as well while you're at it
