best if its in singapore dollar

thxsDisc brake for mountain bike?
Disc brakes are good for wet and especially muddy conditions. This is because the brake is not near the tyre and doesn.t get so much crud on the braking surface.

If you purchase the hydraulic type, you can enjoy the benefits of being able to apply greater force where it counts, meaning that you can brake later than you would have.

This comes at a cost, namely weight. It will also cost you about 拢100 per wheel for a reasonable system. But you can not fit them unless you have calliper mounting points on your frame and forks. Also, in order to fit the discs, you need disc compatible hubs.

Overall, discs are better than v brakes in wet conditions, especially wet xc. But if you don't have the hubs and frame, its going to cost you, you might want to consider a new bike, with discs. Giant do a reasonable machine for about 拢400.

cheapest disc brake would probably be about 50-100 in us dollars, good ones(hydraulix ones) are about 100-200, or even moreDisc brake for mountain bike?
I personally think that if you need to use a disk brake on the road, you are going too fast. You don't want to lock up brakes on pavement. It's not like offroad where dragging the wheel around a turn is a viable technique. Maybe you should slow down in the rain to be safe.Disc brake for mountain bike?
i have no idea how to convert to singapore dollars, but i'll start off telling you if you want disc brakes, you need a compatible fork and disc hub. then get the brake kit. there are 6-bolt mounts and Centerlock mounts (made by Shimano). if you want disc on the rear, you need to make sure your frame is disc compatible. i think the Tektro IO is a good entry level mechanical disc brake. i bought mine for US $50.

they will work so much better in the rain than rim brakes. if you ride in heavy rain or mud though, the pads will wear out much faster unless you get metallic pads. organic and resin pads wear out fast.Disc brake for mountain bike?
Disc breaks are inexpensive $30-$100. The pricey part is that your frame must be built for disc brakes. Most newer Mountain bikes are.

If you are going to continue riding an older bike I recomend the older Cantilever breaks. They are better than V-Breaks.

check out ebay.com and you can get some of those for $5 or $10

How to change rear plymouth grand voyager 99 brakes?

not sure if they are disk brakes, engine is 3,3L v6How to change rear plymouth grand voyager 99 brakes?
They are prob drum brakes. If you have not done brakes before (esp drum), have an experienced person help you.

Jack up and secure vehicle.

Back off adjusters from the backside of the drum. The adjusters are under the rubber plug. It might not be necessary if the drums aren't worn badly.

Remove tire and rim

Remove drum

screw in adjuster to compact it

Take a few pictures from different angles, noting spring mountings.

Remove springs (vise grips or spec tools) and shoes, noting that there is a longer and shorter shoe, and which one is to the rear and front. it matters.

Take pics of Ebrake fastening scheme.

Wash down with brake parts cleaner

Replace shoes and use NEW springs, etc (buy a spring kit when you buy your shoes).

Be sure Ebrake is fastened right

Put drum on again

put wheel on

adjust the adjuster with a special tool (or a screwdriver-that's what I use). Your object is to adj the shoes until they just barely drag against the drums while you spin the wheel. (you are in nuetral with wheels chocked, right?)

I may have missed something, but that is the basic idea- that's why I said to have an experienced person looking over your shoulder. Definately test drive with a few easy stops, and a few hard stops. If the drums heat up enough to hurt your hand, adj the shoes inward. They should stay cool to just warm.

Buy quality shoes from NAPA or a reputable parts place. Don't buy the AutoZone cheapies. Mid grade is fine, esp for the rear brakes, which last a long time.

You may have to adj the Ebrake cable, but it should be fine. The Ebrake should be noticably better (engaging sooner).

Good Luck! How to change rear plymouth grand voyager 99 brakes?
Stop by your local auto parts store and purchase a Haynes repair manual for your Voyager, it's full of good info for someone like yourself and will pay for itself with just one repair, in your case brakes. Good luck.

My rear brake is not at all strong and there is alot of freeplay on the left lever. I have tightened the brake wire under the engine case to the fullest and there is no difference, so im assuming its the brake shoes worn out. (Its not a disc brake its a drum brake)

To change the brake shoes what will i need to do. Will i need to loosen the wire, then change the shoes, then tighten the wire back up?How to change brake shoes on a piaggio typhoon 125cc moped?

slow down, you probably dont need new brakes, there adjuster you need to tighten is on the brake drum lever, its just a nut that is screwed onto the actuating rod, you will see its threaded for 2 or 3 inches, you should just need to screw it in, if its that loose, you will probably have to screw it further on quite a bit, like 1/2 to 1 cm.

    4 Wheel disc brake service?

First of all, my car is 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5

And I also live in so california in la mirada around border line of orange county.

How much is it to service my car's brakes(it has 4 wheel disc brakes)?

What shop is most dependable and the cheapest I can go (I am a college student with not much money)?

This time I have to change brake pads on all 4 wheels and replace 2 rear rotors and resurface on front rotors. And I plan to diagnose my braking system cause i think my brakes arn't wearing out evenly when i look into my tire rims. I think i'll also need a brake oil flush too but im not too sure.

I am actually planning to go to sears auto in brea mall to service my brakes. Is it a good idea?

My family has been getting new tires to replace the worn ones for few years and i think they do a good job.

But I want to also know if there are any other cheaper shops that does a good job on brakes.

And once again, How much would my brake service cost on average with 2 rotors replaced with all 4 brake pads?

Thanks in advanced! :)4 Wheel disc brake service?
going to sear is a good idea. i have use then before and they do a good job.

you only need the spindles/calipers/rotors, the control arms are the same except for the sway bar mounts. You will also need to use the ebrake cables since they are different lengths.I have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?
    to change rotor

    jack up the car

    remove the front wheels

remove two bolts behind the calipers and hang them loose

remove screws on the rotor then wobble it out

and install in new oneI have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?
You'll need special brake tools, some big auto parts stores have free loaners.

You'll also need to turn the rotors and drums so there is no low or high spots. Some auto parts stores do this for free for buying the pads and shoes.

You'll need a micrometer to measure that there is enough metal on the rotors and brake drums. Again most auto parts stores can do this for free.

As for doing the brake job, I recommend buying the correct Chilton's manual for your car. It will give you step by step instructions and pictures. It will also give the correct minimum manufacturer specs to make sure the brakes will work correctly.I have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?

    Mechanical disc brakes help?

I recently changed my tyres from downhill mtb to semi-slick hybrids. I have mechanical disc brakes on both wheels and after changing the wheels the front wheel continues to brake strongly and progressivly. However the rear disc has gone from a progressive braking to locking the tyre, even a small amount of pressure now locks the rear wheel. I have adjusted the pad spacing and the cable length but there is not a lot of change. How would i fix this, or is this down to a lower grip on the new tyres and cant be fixed?Mechanical disc brakes help?
To change how well the brakes grab change the pads, different compounds are available for most disk brakes and can change how hard or soft they engage. Check with your local bike shop to see what they carry, don't be afraid to mix two compounds either to get the progressive braking your after.Mechanical disc brakes help?
count yourself lucky you have mechanical disk brakes that work, get some levers with some modulation adjustment (like alot of avids do) tweak them and enjoy! :)Mechanical disc brakes help?
    You got it right.

The tyre grip has changed the dynamics of the brake system. There is little you can do. It puzzles me why you'd want to use a bike designed for offroad on the road...seems similar to driving a Rolls Royce in the dirt.

Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?

I have always wanted to change the discs and pads on my peugeot because they are now at the stage where they are worn and need replaced. I normally take it to the garage but the cheapest quote that i can get for changing them is £400 supplied and fitted where as i can get the parts for only £120. I can normally do this kind of stuff without much hassle but i like to backup of instructions incase it goes wrong. Are there any mechanics out there who can give me step by step on how to do this or point me in the direction of a rescource which can help me. How easy would you say it was 10 being hardest 1 the easiest, All help much appreciated.Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?
    1. Jack up the car, use an additional stand and remove the wheel.

    2. Push (with the help of a large screwdriver as a pivot arm) the piston as far as possible back in the caliper.

    3. Remove the bottom M6x20mm bolt, which is holding the caliper fixed to the slider pin.

    4. Open the caliper by turning it along the upper slider pen. Take out the pads, clean the contact point and put the new pads in. Apply copper grease to the lugs and back of the pads to prevent brake squeal.

    5. Remove the upper M8x20mm bolt and gently put the caliper in a free hanging position from the brake hose.

    6. Remove the M10x20mm bolts fixing the anchor-brace to the upright.

    7. Remove the two M6-Torx30 bolts, which fix the disk to the hub.

    8. After a couple of years of bonding the disk needs some convincing to give up its attachment with the hub. Use a plastic (not rubber or steel) hammer to knock it loose with some well aimed hits.

    9. Before fitting the new disk, clean the face of the hub with a steel brush and apply a little (!) copper grease, to prevent things sticking in the future.

    10. Put everything together in reverse order (apply a bit of “Lock-tite” to the M10 and M8 bolts and get the correct torques from your handbook:

The M10x20 mm bolts with **Nm (or as tight as possible with a hand tool)

The M8x20 bolts with **Nm (or hand tight plus 30 degrees)

The M6 Torx bolts hand tight

Not sure how much help I've been but re-message if you need further help. Just be careul not to lose anything and put everything on in the reverse order. Important too that you loosen the wheel nuts first by half a turn before jacking up, use axle stands or similar and even take photos if you can so you can see where evrytthingf goes back - works for a few people I know!

And, as said, buy a Haynes Manual too, they're invaluable, they'll give you the correct torques and everything.Changing Brake Pads and Discs on 2004 Peugeot 307 S model. HELP!?

  • Converting drum brakes to disc brakes?

is it possible to change the rear drum brakes on a 2wd 94 chevy suburban to big disk brakes? if it is how much would it cost on average?Converting drum brakes to disc brakes?
yes its possible. as for cost heres what you need to consider.... first, do you wanna do it as a kit? or just swap the axle with another GM product like say a trans am axle that already has disk brakes. cost is hard to nail down here because there is alot involved. you will need to change more than just the brakes. ie: master cyclinder piston, brake distribution manifold block, parking brake, and does your truck have any kinda anti lock devices? ( hope not, those suck no matter what anyone says! ). generally the kit ( if avail for your truck ) would be the easier way to go as it will contain all that you need for a set price. please take the time to research this among the aftermarket suppliers. this research will also give you an idea of the work involved to do the project. curious to know why you would want to do this as the rear brakes only provide 30% of your braking. i could see it on a performance vehicle. if you use this truck for hauling, ponder using trailer brakes. much easier project than what your after now.

How do i change the front brake discs on a 94 honda accord?

i see a huge nut, but i don't know if i have to take it out or not....helpHow do i change the front brake discs on a 94 honda accord?
Yes, the big nut does have to come off and the whole spindle so you can press the hub out. The breaks are a B!T@ to change on Accords. How do i change the front brake discs on a 94 honda accord?
First take out the axles. Do this by undoing the lower ball joint and the 17mm bolt that holds the strut to the lower control arm .

I'm assuming you can get the caliper apart. Afetr the axle is removed, you will see 4 10mm 12 point bolts. Unscrew these a little at a time and use a socket with extension and hit it with a hammer as hard as you can , going around in circles.

The disc is bolted to the bearing from the back, so you have to press out the bearing and the3 disk and then seperate them.

Soak around the bearing with liquid wrench or WD-40 to help, they are usually rusted in there.

    Good luck!

By the way, you need to take off that nut to get the axle out. (yes, the big one, and it needs to come off.) Do not pull it out of the trans, use a prybar !!!!How do i change the front brake discs on a 94 honda accord?
If I am not mistaken , if you are just changing pads all you have to do is remove the caliper and use C clamp to push the piston back inside . If you are taking the rotor off see if you have small scews around the face of it and that should do it . If not I would ask a mechanic or even an auo parts store can help you with that . But I think the Big nut you are talkining about is bearings. If this comes when you re-install just tighten enoughto where you just barley feel a drag. How do i change the front brake discs on a 94 honda accord?

Can i get some advice on a cheap place to get parts web or shop?

Plus how easy is it to do yourself iam of average ability with manual work so any pitfalls tp avoid? how do you bleed the brakes because i was told i have to do this when changing the disks.I have a p-reg Vauxhall Vectra and i am thinking about changing the brake disks and pads myself to save money?
if youve never done it before, get the parts from a store , they order the bits in for you and any decent store will check youve got the right part for your car. no need to go to a main dealer most little independant stores order the right bits in for you.

Its fairly easy to do, although slightly different procedure is needed on each car, having never worked a vectra I dont want to say its simple for you to do when there could be a fixing or special tool needed that i dont know about ( making the job tricky )

If you get yourself a decent haynes manual or equivilent and take your time, there shouldnt be any problems.

you dont need to bleed the brake fluid as the fluid presurises the caliper to push the pads to the disk. and your not disconnecting the caliper from the car, your just disconnecting it from the disk so the fluid pipes can stay intact.

Remember these are your brakes,, they're kind of important.

If you do change the disks remember to support the caliper with something, dont just leave it dangling by the pipes, it may seem fine hanging there, but thats how you end up with pipes splitting and no brakes at a very inopertune moment.

I think i need a brake change please help.?

Just recently my car brakes started to squeak. Ive had those brakes for about a year and six months. I dont know if the brakes have dust in them, i dont know. It only squeaks when i slightly press the brake, when i press it all the way its all good. If i do need this brake change how difficult is it to do it your self, i have never changed brakes my self, but i did rebuild a top end of a AMC and made it run again. I have front disk brakes and drums in the back. what kind of brake pads should i get, cause iam getting them from auto zone, and the prices very bettween diffrent brands, $35 is the most ill pay for a pair of brake pads. so which ones should i get, what do i need to keep in mind. thank you for all your helpI think i need a brake change please help.?
OK it sounds like it's about time, dust is a factor but after 20 months it's time. %26quot;Bendix or Raybestes%26quot; are your best bet and you may get another 16 to 20 months. With the rotors and drums if you run a finger nail across the surface and it gets caught or really feels rough they need to be turned, turning the drums and rotors will make the brake shoes and pads last longer. Yes get the %26quot;Auto Repair Manual%26quot; for your car to help you with the job the first time or 2. Good Luck and take it slow the first time or 2.I think i need a brake change please help.?

You get what you pay for, get the cheap ones and they blow out black dust and squeal like a retarded pig..... get the better pads, ceramic are the best. They are easy to change, you will need to buy a C-clamp to push the piston back in the caliper for the disc brakes.I think i need a brake change please help.?
You do not know what the problem is and do not know how to do it. Yet you want to fix it your self for $35. I am glad I do not live in Long Beach.

Hey: We mechanic need to make a living too.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Well for starters you get what you pay for. Pads will range anywhere from 6.00 to 60.00. They have the regular elcheapo and then they have extreme duty. You asked a question that leaves a lot of questions open. You need to go somewhere and get a free brake check. There are a number of things that could be making the pads squeak besides actually needing to replace them. You mentioned dust that is one thing. Stuck caliper will give that effect also. Dry slides. Broken anti squeaker. I have even had a bad hose cause that effect. How old is the car.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Yeah, you can do it ,but you might want to buy a Haynes repair manual for your car. It will tell you what, if any ,special tools you will need.

Get the middle priced set of pads and be sure to apply the anti squeal paste or the plastic shims that come with them.

DON'T use a bumper jack or the jack that came with your car unless you place it on stands . Be safe, don't get under ANY car if it's not on stands.I think i need a brake change please help.?
It depends, how hard are you on your breaks? If you ease into everything, they may just be glazed over. If this is the problem, a spin on a grinding wheel should do the trick. As for difficulty, disc breaks are easier to change and drums are a little more complicated.I think i need a brake change please help.?
get semi -metallic pads and shoes about 20.00 ea set The sound you hear by that description is that of the early warning device on the pads to tell you that the pads are ready to be changed-- its a piece of metal that makes a noise because it touches the rotor first when the pads are worn. as for the work it is fair but the trick is that you need some specialty tools ie brake spring pliers, brake spoon, hex or torques wrench/socket 6%26quot; c-clamp and you have to run the rotors and drums down some where to get them cut in the back take both drums off but only change one set of shoes at a time so you can look at the other side if you get lost If you have abs most of them dont like having the fluid pushed back into the master cylinder so you have to clamp the line open the bleeder screw to push the caliper back if you do it yourself get a book hope this helps

Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?

    Hi,

I just got front brake rotor changed for my toyota camry 96 and the service station charged me 260$ for that (labor =119 and part = 139). I wanted to know if that was overpriced? how much on an average a front brake (disk) rotor change would cost.

ThanksFront brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
The price is not out of reason if they had to change your rotors.

Typical costs for brakes: $30-$40. Rotors typically cost $50-$75/per rotor and I'm assuming you replaced both of them.

Labor charge for the brake job should be 1-1.5 hrs. Again $119 is not out of line.

So I'd say no I think that would be typically what you would expect to pay for a brake job requiring that the rotors be changed.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
It sure seems high.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
I would go on one of the auto parts stores websites like AutoZone.com, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA auto parts, PartsAmerica.com or any one of hundreds of websites selling %26quot;Toyota Auto Parts%26quot; (search Yahoo). Then fill in your car's year, make, model etc and check the cost of front brake rotors. Of course if the Toyota dealer did the brake job, the dealer parts cost will be higher by say 50%, but if you find they're charging 3 times as much compared to a name brand aftermarket rotor you price out, I'd take that price quote printout to the service manager and ask if they made a mistake on your parts charges. Also, you could go to any other Toyota dealer's parts counter and ask them how much it is for a brake rotor for your car.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?
that price seems about right, I would hope they replaced both rotors or resurfaced one side and replaced the other though. and put new pads on. I would have charge ya 127.50 in labor, 58.22 for pads and resuraced the rotors would be included, if you had to have a rotor, then I would I guess they would run about 80.00 bucks.

Is the handbrake inside the disc or on the caliper???

remove the caliper and any screws fixing disc to the hub.

If its in the discs it will be easier to de-adjust the handbrake shoes, u need a torch to look through wheel bolt hole to find the big cog which is the adjuster (either at top or bottom), usin a screwdriver move the cog a few turns till disc can be moved freely then tap off.

Fit new disc and adjust shoes till disc wont move then slacken off a couple of teeth, make sure the disc spins freely. Refit the caliper with new pads, pump brake pedal to square up the pads and work the handbrake a few times and check that the disc still spins ok if not adjust or slacken off should have 4 or 5 clicks when slowly pulling h/brake on Vauxhall omega brakes?

Without wishing to be rude, if you can't work out how to do it and you have not been into Halfords to have a look at the manual, then you should either have someone else do it or get a knowledgable friend to take you through the job. If you do this wrong, and the brakes bind on you will be a bit irritated. If you do it wrong and they fail, you may not be in a position to be irritated about anything.

  • How easy is it to change the front brake discs on a Daewoo laganza.?

It will be like changing the brake discs on any other car. If you are a competent mechanic you will have no problem. If you are driving a Daewoo...You better hire it done. To save money, buy your own parts from an auto parts store. Tell your mechanic that you were going to install it yourself but you dont have the time. Then you just pay for labor and you save the Parts Markup over retail by the mechanic. He wont warranty the parts, but brake part failure is Very Rare. Good luck!

If you dont feel comfortable buying your own parts, call a parts store for retail prices and make sure your mechanic does not charge higher than retail. You should not get his Mechanics Discount when buying parts, but you should not have to pay more than retail either.

you can change the pads yourself for about $50 US (Maybe 25 or so in the UK). Not knowing labor charges, I had my daughters done here in the US for $150 and that included a new caliper assembly.

500 pounds is like $1000 in the US and that is way way too much.

Get another estimate and never use that rip off artist again. The brake disc and pads on my golf4?
if he's just changing the pads and rotors, He could be ripping you ioff. But the then again, it is a volkjswagen and thhose cars expensive to repair here in north america. But you seem to be in britain, so yea, he's ripping you off. I suggest you find another mechanic to do the job. should only cost you 200 dollars.

this is one of the easiest things to do to a car.

    engage parking brake

    loosen wheel lugs (dont remove)

jack up car and place on jack stands

    remove wheel lugs and wheel

loosen and remove two bolts from brake caliper (varies by car)

remove brake caliper from top (a prying tool may be needed but should ultimately roll towards rear of car from the top.

remove old pads and put on new, you may need to compress the piston depending on wear (to do that remove lid from master cylinder and force piston to fully disengage, taking care not to damage it, a c-clamp and a peice of metal works great)

put everything back on in reverse order starting with the caliper and work your way back.Does anyone know a good website that demonstrates how to change brake pads on your car?

i'd say not to take risk of changing brakes on ur own....

firstly.....take car on ramp....remove the front two tyres.....u'll see the big hub....just losen dat big bolt....remove the hub....simillarly remove the rear wheel's hub.....check for hand brake is released.....now u can see the brake liners...drum/disc brake arrangement.....there is one screw on the right side just tighten or losen it equally with all four wheels....otherwise u'll experience one side pull of ur car when u apply brakes....n then repeate process reversely add up tyres.....

But i still recommend u to take ur car to specialist otherwise it may harm ur car's stability %26amp; alignment....

  • How to adjust disc brakes without affecting the lever modulation?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;

    continuing from that question:

I have found out that the brake pads on my avid bb5's are rubbing on the rotor which is stopping the wheel from spinning freely, I can stop it from rubbing with the red dial, but when I do the lever becomes less responsive and you have to pull the brake lever harder for it to lock.

How can I stop the brake pads from touching the disc without it changing the power of the brake lever? is it possible that the pads will wear down on their own and the problem will stop by itself? or do I have to use another dial/adjuster?

To be honest with you, your brakes are very important and if you need to ask how to replace them, then my advice would be to get them changed at a garage.

Ja.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?
easy...you need a wheel brace, axial stand some spanners and allen keys...loosen wheel, jack up and support the car...remove wheel....remove calliper from behind the disc..remove the disc..fit new one but clean with thinners/petrol as there coverd in oil...refit calliper...u need to force the pads apart to push in the pistons of the ccalliper..caliper either comes apart by an allen key bolt from behind or a bolt or 2...once the calliper is split just replace the pads opposite of removal..refit calliper checking all is tight...and your done..replace wheel, drop on the floor and tighten the wheel nuts...do the other side but before moving the car stamp on the brakes till they go sold and your done....a manual will help,i advise buying one.How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?
jack your car up and secure it so it won,t fall, take the wheel off, take a c-clamp and draw the piston in the caliper in, take 2 bolts out, take the caliper off and change the pads and install the caliper and tighten the bolts, spray it down with brake cleaner and pump up the brakes. How do i change my Corsa B Front Brakes?

Really easy. Take wheels off, then take the pads off put the new ones on. You probably don't need to replace the discs unless they're defective.

I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?

how can i reduce the the extra wearing on my pads and my caliper from getting to hot i have bled my brakes i have no problems with the other side rear. this problem has only occured since i changed discs and pads.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
Sticky caliper a lot of people use copper grease on their calipers which can actually cause them to seize sometimes. There is a new lubricant avaliable it comes in small tubes its made by mintex and called cera tex any autoshop that stock mintex pads will be able to supply you with this.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
The slider pins are probably stuck, hence why they are getting hot and not %26quot;releasing%26quot;. Since the brakes only push from the piston side, if the caliper pins arent lubed, it will only push on that side. Sometimes they move and get stuck and dont release, sounds like it here. Dont use WD-40. Use silicone grease. It wont dry up and mixes with whatever else has been put in there before.

Take a rat tail file and clean the inside where the slider pins go and rinse with brake kleen. Blow out and re-grease. Be sure to get all the rust off. Do this every time you change your brakes.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
the only fix is a new caliper.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
Sticky caliper. The discs are not kicking the pads off.

Take it off again, remove the pads and gently peel back the rubber dust covers on the pistons. Now add a SMALL squirt of WD 40 to the pistons. (DON'T GO MAD. WD 40 %26amp; brakes are not a good mix) Depress the brake pedal to move the piston out then force the piston back in. Repeat until everything running smoothly.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
    Definitely a sticky caliper.

My advice would be to fix it right, rather than any 'quick-easy-cheap' repair, but I may be just a little 'over the top' when it comes to brakes or steering.

Calipers aren't that expensive and don't do just the one side. Do everything with brakes in at least pairs. Replace both rear calipers.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
You did not state what type of car or how many miles, but you probably need to either lube your caliper slides or replace the caliper. Rebuilt calipers usually aren't very expensive.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?
Sounds like you have a sticky calliper, you can try the WD40 route mentioned before. However some cars have a history of this type of problem, the VW Golf for example.

Ja.I have a problem with my rear brakes on the passenger side caliper gets too hot and my pads are wearing quick?

Then put back on rotor tighten the two bolts. then do the same to the other side. when don check your break fluid. top off if needed.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
The rotor is held on by the wheel when it is put back on and the combination of the brake pads and caliper. your ok no problems that i see.

the rotor in some cars is held on by two little screws on others its held in place by the tire rim and bolts

no worrys just slap it on there but wait did you get them resurfaced you should since you replaced the pads..Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
I think on those cars the lug nuts hold everything together everything should be fineChanging brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
It's supposed to be loose.. The caliper and pads hold it tight along with your wheel being pressed against it.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
your caliper holds the rotor on, on some cars, best thing to do is look in the maintenance manual hope that helps,

if the rotors are worn then the pads have worn a grove in the rotor, take the master cylinder cap off and either pry the pads away from the rotor or use a hammer and tap the caliper loose. don't press the brake petal while the caliper is of the rotor as this will blow the pistons out of caliper when the old pads are off push the piston into the caliper insert the new pads re attach the caliper,s and press on the brake petal to resetHow to remove and replace disk brakes on a 91 ford thunderbird, calipers stuck?

I have a 1992 Nissan Sentra XE (four door), and I want to change the stock drum brakes on the rear to disk brakes. I would also like to change the rotors in the front to bigger ones. What all do I need to do? I don't need an exact answer for my car, just the basic steps for converting drum brakes to disk.

Right now its FWD, so it doesn't even have power going back there, but I still want disk brakes. I am planning on doing an engine swap, and making it RWD, but that's a whole other animal. How do you change rear drum brakes to disk on a Nissan Sentra?
Your money would be best spent on a car less than 18 years old. That said everything is different from the master Cly to the rear parking brake cables and hydraulic hoses and tubing.. It could get costly quickly. I know only anti lock brake sentra had disks rear the 1994 year model. You could get used parts out of a autorecyclers yard. They don't like being called junk yards. I have never seen a rear wheel drive sentra conversion. If you want a 350Z get one it would be cheaper and performance parts will be available. Good LuckHow do you change rear drum brakes to disk on a Nissan Sentra?
I have to totally agree with John Paul...These are some ambitious and potentially expensive mods for that old car. As much as I like Nissan and agree they can run and run you gotta worry if or when the rust will start.... The biggest killer of these cars is not mechanical but body cancer....I would drive it the way it is and save your money...If your heart is set on the rear wheel drive consider a Z car--if you like the Sentra a R or Spec V are what is in your future.

How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?

I want to buy rapid fire shifters for my Raleigh M20, but dont know how to take of the grip shift. Also can I change my pad brakes to disk brakes. How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
Changing the shifters is simple, but you'll need to understand how to adjust the derailleurs as well. Here's a link to Sram's tech docs....they have instructions and diagrams to help you out a lot more than just trying to explain the process. If you visit Shimano's page, they have info there if your new shifters don't have the info with them. http://www.sram.com/en/service/sram/view

If you want to go with disk brakes, you need to be sure you have disk-compatible hubs on your wheels, and also that both your frame and fork have the necessary mounting tabs for the calipers. If they don't, then you'll be spending more money than the bike is worth to upgrade the brakes. In that case, I'd recommend buying a new bike instead....you'll get more bang for your buck and have mostly modern components instead of a retrofitted older bike.

Also, keep this in mind: decent-quality v-brakes that are well adjusted and using good pads, will stop very very well. Disks do stop better, but there's nothing wrong with v-brakes unless you're doing long downhills or riding in wet/muddy/gritty conditions. It might be worthwhile to just set up your v-brakes correctly, possibly changing to a better quality lever if the ones you have are flexy.

Hope this helps. :o)How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
Loosen the clamp screw that holds the Grip Shift on... it will slide off. If you have Shimano gears then using rapid fire isn't a problem.

You can change to disk is you have disk hubs and front/back disk brake hangers. On a M20 I don't think you do.How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
MR is correct. If you look closely you will see a small hole in the shifter body that houses an allen key screw. Loosen it, remove the handgrip and brake lever, and slide off the shifter.

Putting discs on the M20 is like putting a jet engine on a biplane. It might be possible, but it would be more expensive than buying a bike with discs already installed.... and the performance would be less than optimum.

How do you change rear brakes on a crf 100. It has a drum brake not a disk and i can't find anywhere that says or shows how to do it. Can someone give me a link or explain how to?thanksHow do you change rear brakes?
You need your bike on some kind of stand or crate to get the rear wheel off the ground. I don't know about your bike specifically but from my experience here's what I'll give you. First, you need to remove the nut that holds the foot brake shaft to the lever on the drum brake itself. Then you remove the codder pin and nut that attaches the torque arm (rod that runs from the swingarm to the drum brake) and let that hang off the swingarm. Then loosen and remove the rear axle, push the tire forward and remove the chain from the sprocket and pull the tire away from the bike. Put down 2 wooden blocks so you can lay the tire sprocket side down on them without having the sprocket on the ground. Now you should be able to pull the drum assembly out of the hub and further disassemble from there.

For reassembly simply reverse the order. Good luck! How do you change rear brakes?
You would need a new wheel, brake caliper, master cylinder, brake lever and swingarm. Forget itHow do you change rear brakes?
Spend the money for a good manual and you won't be sorry.

When I did a repair on an older Honda with no available manual, I took a bunch of digital pictures as I took it apart and made sure it looked the same (but cleaner and properly lubed and adjusted) when it went back together.

I have had many bikes and cars apart over the years though, so I have a pretty good idea how things are supposed to look and go back together. Even then, I spent a lot of time trying to find a source of the actual procedures because a little guess-work at the wrong time can cost you lots of time and money.

If you really don't want to get a manual, go see if you can get one of the guys at a local dealer to talk you through the steps and let you know if there is anything to watch out for. Most of those guys are fellow riders who will take time out to help another rider out. It never hurts to ask.

Good luck. How do you change rear brakes?

How to adjust the rear brakes on my mountain bike?

btw, can i change the brakes on my bike from calipers to disc brakes? if so, what would i have to do? how much would it cost me?How to adjust the rear brakes on my mountain bike?
Those are called sidepull brakes. Here are the directions to adjust them as well as they can be, but I am guessing that the brakes are made from stamped sheet metal and will never work well. This is a little long so bear with me...

    1) Adjust the brake shoes. Loosen one shoe at a time (probably a 10mm wrench DO NOT USE PLIERS), pressing the caliper in so the shoe contacts the rim. Center the shoe onto the rim and retighten. No need for the Power of Atlas when tightening... just 1/2 turn past snug is all you need. Align all shoes.

    2) Loosen the cable fixing bolt (again, probably a 8mm, 9mm or 10mm wrench). Squeeze the shoes against the rim with one hand, then pull the end of the cable with a pair of pliers. While still holding the calipers in place tighten the fixing bolt. Again, no need for overtightening.

    3) Squeeze the brake lever HARD a couple of times. Then, as you are operating the lever check to see if both of the caliper arms are moving equally. If NOT, %26quot;tweak%26quot; the nut (probably 10mm) that holds the brake onto the bike until both arms work. You usually don't have to loosen the nut... just %26quot;help%26quot; the caliper to center while moving the nut. Repeat as necessary. This takes a bit of time when you first try it and can be a hassle.

I can tell you without reservation that it will cost you a LOT more than the value of your bike to add discs. You'll need disc compatible hubs, disc compatible brake levers, discs, calipers, cables, not to mention the requirement that your frame has to have disc brake mounts which I am certain it doesn't. However, if it DOES have mounts, figure a minimum of $300- $400 for mechanical discs and all the fixin's.

How do you change a front brake disc on a motor bike?

I have a bent front disc brake and need to change it. Is this easy to do myself? I have a KLE500 with a side stand - no centre stand. Obviously i need to unscrew the nut and take the left fork away from the wheel but will i need a jack to take the weight off the wheel or will the right fork take the weight. I am also a bit unclaer as to how the left fork will pull away from the bike as it is obviously attached further up towards the handle bars. Sorry to sound thick but this is my first bike. I don't want to start something i cant finish so any advice on this would be much appreciated. SueHow do you change a front brake disc on a motor bike?

Others have answered this nice and clearly. I'd just like to add that if you've been quoted 拢300 you need to find yourself a different garage. If you need a garage for anything (and you don't, really, for this one) call around as many as it takes to find one with a quote you can live with.

And I hate to say it, but a less scrupulous mechanic may assume that due to being a woman you can be fed bullshit and quoted a higher price. Easy way to combat it is to find out as much as you can about your bike and make it sound like you know what you're talking about.

Changing the front brake disk is quite easy, undo the wheel, take the wheel off, take the old disc off, put the new disc on, put the wheel back on the bike, I would also suggest that as you are changing the disc that you put new brake pads on as well. You do not and I repeat DO NOT need to remove the forks in any way whatsoever.

Oh yeah, very good point by maddog, get the front wheel off the ground first.

Undo what ever axle retention there is (axle fork caps, pinch bolts, etc) and either remove/slide out axle, or remove axle caps, and wheel should come out. PAY ATTENTION to spacer placement (if any). Disc should just unbolt, new one bolt on. Depending on disc wear, a new (hence thicker) disc MIGHT require the brake pads to be opened up a bit (pushed back into the calipers).

Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?

Is it worth to do so? How much is the fee?Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?
You are talking about a safety related issue it is always worth repairing or replacing your brakes. But to replace a drum to a disc is not worth it.

Go to a brake shop they usually give free estimates, shop around. Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?
Since the car you're discussing is already fitted with drum brakes I don't know that there is anything to gain.

The rear brakes actually do a small percentage of the stopping, (30 to 40%) making the effectiveness of the rear brakes a small matter.

Disc brakes are preferred over drum brakes because they are less effected by heat; the rotor has a great deal of air flow over it as do the friction pads. The rear brakes don't get heated up nearly as much as the front which is why most manufacturers just go with the lighter weight drum brake in the rear.Is it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?
it is not usually worth the cost for most cars driven on the street in a law abiding fashion ,if you are racing and a different year of car that is almost identical to yours has them an upgrade may be possible for a reasonable cost by switching the parts from the newer or sportier version of your carIs it worth to change a rear drum brake to disc brake?
Not really. The front brakes do most of the work anyhow.

    Corolla spongy brakes?

i just changed the front disc brake pads and rotors on my 2000 corolla and the mechanic said the rear drums still have 45% left on them so i didn't have the rear changed. I'm not exactly sure if this problem was present before the brake change or not but i noticed that my brake is really spongy and i have to press it about 90% down to get a good brake response and after 90% it is really stiff and makes it hard for me to judge how hard i am braking before locking the wheels. This is important cause my car lacks ABS. I have heard that changing the brake fluid and bleeding the lines helps my brakes be more sharper and less spongy but my receipt from the brake job indicates that they did change the brake fluid and did bleed the lines!? so im wondering whether i should take it to toyota instead and ask them to bleed the line and change the brake fluid or just to ask them to inspect the brakes? i know there is a 80$ diagnostic charge if no problem is found and im wondering whether i should risk it?Corolla spongy brakes?

front tires are disk brakes. to remove rotor remove tire. then you will see the caliper . need to push the pads back good way to do that is use a screw drive common or flat tip. stick in rotor ( not far just enof to to pry apart) and pull to you and you should see the caliper move and open up..on caliper their are two screws on the back mounted in rubber. most of time they have a Allen head of stair head UN screw them and the caliper will come off and then the rotor will slide off. Use a c clamp to push the pucks back beast way is to use a old pad lay it on the puck and tighten the clamp up till the pad is flush with the caliper. the rear brakes are drum. on the back side you. the backing plate. you will See a rubber plug remove it use a brake spoon or small tip common. stick in slot their is a wheel in their you turn one way tighten the brakes the other way loosen them. one way it will turn easy the other way kinda hard. one way to find out is to spin the wheel and turn the adjusting wheel if tire gets harder to turn the going wrong way. once you get the wheel to turn really easy then take off tire and you will see the drum. pull on it with both hands if wont move then use a hammer and hit the front a few times it should pop off a little then pull it off. hope this helps. How do i change the drum brakes on my 1986 regal?
If you have any mechanical skill the best thing to do is get a book and take plenty of pictures . Do not disassemble bothsides at the same time as you will need the other for reference when you are done . If this is an 1985 Buick Regal rear wheel drive car you have disc in front and drums in the rear . The disc takes a 3/8 allen wrench to take the calipar loose . There are 2 bolts holding it on and once you get it loose you need to back the calipars off to get new pads in . There are several ways to do this one is to use a C-clamp and drive it back . This is the way most people do it and watch to make sure you don't pinch the rubber boot around the piston . On the back you have an aguster that needs backed off and it has to go back in the same way it came out or it will loosen up on its own and fall out leaving you with no back brakes . The best way to do one of these the first time is to have someone there who has done this often to help when you get stuck . Books or web sites are fine but experienced eyes are a lot better . Most of the time a buddy or friend might do it for a few beers ( afterward is recommended ) and a good bullshit session while doing this . Good Luck and call a few friends and see who is willing . Don't over look chicks either as they can work on cars to or their man can anyway . This is how my wife gets me to do stuff for her friends .How do i change the drum brakes on my 1986 regal?

When to change Brake Disk / Drum?

    How many KM?

I got small nissan sunny car. When to change Brake Disk / Drum?
no need to change unless you've worn the brakes to the point of being metal to metal, other than that the drums should last forever and your dics should be checked when changing the pads for either warping or being worn too thinWhen to change Brake Disk / Drum?
You replace these parts only when they are worn out. There are specifications to go by when you measure them; make the comparison when you service them to determine if they need replacement or just resurfacing. When to change Brake Disk / Drum?
This is not like an oil change which must be done every 3,000 miles. The disk pads or brake shoes will wear differently depending on your style driving or even on their quality.

Disk pads are easier to examine, because they are readily visible, both inside and outside pads. It is easy to judge how much meat you have on both. Wearing them %26quot;too thin%26quot; will score the rotors (create groves), requiring them to be turned (filed by a machine to a smooth/even surface) before replacing the pads. Brake shoes are more difficult, as one needs to remove the tires and drums in order to inspect them. The same principal as the disk/rotors applies that is, don't let then wear down to the metal, which will score the drums, equally requiring them to be turned.

Amount of meat left (usually referred to by mechanics): the thickness of either the rotors or the drums is measured before turning them, in order to assure they have not been worn to below thickness specifications, in which case they must be replaced. One sound I never want to hear (neither you) is the sound of metal against metal, meaning that either pads or shoes are completely worn to the metal, because this causes heavy scoring on either the rotors or the drums. It is a good idea to inspect them if you are not sure at what stage yours are. If replaced properly, brakes ought to last you at least 40,000 miles. On my vehicles I use the Bendix brand pads and shoes which cost more, but are well worth the money. When to change Brake Disk / Drum?
There is no replacement time table on brake disk's. You replace them when they become damaged either by the brake pads wearing out and scoring or warping of the surface to the point that they can not be re-surfaced. A shop can measure this and determine if replacement is required or if they can be serviced to restore smooth braking.

How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on a mazda 323(1994) can any1 do it.?

Many libraries have books with photos that will guide you through the process. You can copy the pages and take them home with you as a reference. If the correct year for your car is not available I suggest you buy either a Haynes or a Chiltons manual at a store that sells brake parts. Read through the process to familiarize your self with the parts and the names of parts.

Be certain to have a safe jack and jack stands to support the car or you could be seriously inured.

If you have a camera, take a photo of what the brakes look like BEFORE you disassemble them. There might be some specials tools you will need. A 3/8 inch ratchet and either the torx or a metric socket to remove the bolts that clamp the retainers to the backing plate. The books from the library might mention the exact size of the bolts. If not, you will have to take a wheel off and look at what is there. If you have a full set of sockets and torx you should already have what you will need.

When you remove the wheel, carefully examine the rotor, (the large shiny disc the pads clamp onto) for grooves or any visible damage such as cracks or gouges. If you see any of that, take the rotors to a shop and have the rotors machined smooth again.

You can compress the caliper with a LARGE C-CLAMP. If they go in reall hard, you might be in trouble. That indicates rust inside the caliper and it might stick tight to the rotor the first time you hit the brakes.

Go slow, follow the instructions from the materials I mentioned and be certain to tighten everything properly. A torque wrench would be a good investment if you plan to do much repair work. Overtightening a bolt can break or strip it. Too loose and something could fall off.

I have been replacing my own brakes for twenty years and nothing has broken or fallen off. You can learn how to do it too.

Takes an afternoon, buy the Chilton's or Haynes manual for your car as this will detail out the steps you need to follow.

Do one side at a time, and finish one before you start the other so you have a completed one you can look at in case you need points of reference.

It helps if you have a 2nd car around just in case you need to run back to the store in mid repair, or you run out of time and have to finish it another day.How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on a mazda 323(1994) can any1 do it.?
The mere thought that you are considering it, is proof that you can do it. You need the proper tools. You need the replacement parts. Take your car to the accessory shop so they may ensure that they issue you with the proper components. You need a jack and blocks on which the car rests once jacked-up. You need compressed air or a solvent to clean the axle and hubs. Remove the wheels once the car is on blocks. Strip the worn components. Replace with the new components in the reverse order. Adjust the breaks by turning the adjustment screw tighter, until the wheel spins freely by hand. Test the results well before risking it back onto the public roads. How hard is it to change brake discs and pads on a mazda 323(1994) can any1 do it.?
Brakes are important part of the car. If you are a novice I suggest you don't touch it. It is better to leave them to the experts. Brakes failure can cost you your life and others too.

How much would it cost me to change the rim brake system to a disc brake system on a Trek 4300 hard tail?

Is it worth it making those changes?

Or is it just better if i buy the Trek 4300 with disc brake option?

my bike is still in great condition, so i don't see buying another one as an option...i just want to try to make those changes, but if just buying one is the better option then so be itHow much would it cost me to change the rim brake system to a disc brake system on a Trek 4300 hard tail?
First make sure your bike's frame has the mounting bosses for disc brakes.

Lets say you go with the Avid BB7 brakes. They're a good entry level brake with lots of adjustability, and they cost about $ 70 each, You will need two of them. Chances are that your bike's wheels don't have a hub that will accept disc brake rotors. The cheapest way to remedy that is to get new wheels. You can find a set for as low as $150 to $200. Providing that you will be able to reuse your old brake levers, the only thing left to buy is two sets of brake cables ~ $15 each.

If you install them yourself you can expect to pay around $370. You just have to decide if it's worth it.

In my opinion, a Trek 4300 isn't worth that kind of upgrade. Let me give you something to think about...

I have two bikes. One is a Santa Cruz Chamelean set up as a singlespeed. I have a really nice Fox fork on it, and the Avid BB7 disc brakes. I ride in the desert mountains of the Southwest. I usually encounter some technical downhill sections, and the disc brakes work great.

My other bike is a 1998 Cannondale Super V 1000. I have it set up as a 27 speed, and it has the old V brakes on it ~ a set of Avid Single Digit 7's.

I ride both bikes on the same trails, and have not encountered any noticable braking differences in terms of performance.

If you're interested in the Single Digit 7's Jensen USA has a great deal on them right now ~ $21.95 a set. That's a little more than half off.How much would it cost me to change the rim brake system to a disc brake system on a Trek 4300 hard tail?
Making the change is feasible only if your frame has the mounting lugs for the discs. If that's not the case then either a new bike with discs is in order or a new frame for yours. There's no economical way to mount disc brakes if your frame doesn't have the lugs. Look on both the rear of your frame near the drop-outs and on the forks, if there's not two lugs with mounting holes present on both of them your bike won't accept discs.

One other point, if you can do it... do it with hydraulic discs not mechanical, for far superior performance. How much would it cost me to change the rim brake system to a disc brake system on a Trek 4300 hard tail?
make sure your frame has the mounting brackets. if it doesn't, it's not possible.

make sure your hubs have the rotor mounting holes. if they don't, just buy new wheels (about $200).

lastly, make sure your fork has the brackets, as well. if it doesn't, you may need a new fork ($300 - $1000, depending on how fancy you want to get).

for a hardtail, i would say a good set of %26quot;ever-fading%26quot; mechanical disc brakes will be good (about $150 for the pair). hydraulic brakes are far superior, but they may exceed your need (about $120 each).

depending on your particular circumstances, it may be an easy, worthwhile upgrade. hope that helps.

I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??

I have a 1995 Honda Civic EX by the way. The last time the brakes were changed was shortly before I bought the car from a private party last April of 2007. I haven't noticed problems stopping but then again I don't want to wait until they get to be paper thin to replace them either. I'd like to keep myself and anyone in my car safer with brake pads changed on a regular schedule just like changing my oil and filter. Thanks!I have disc brakes in the front and back. Hi, brakes change will depend on your braking habit. Hard braking means you will wear them out more. Gentle and gradual braking will conserve your brake pads. You can drive 100,000miles and hit your brakes once and they will be as good as new.

City driving with lots of stop and go will wear brakes more than open highway driving, so the type of driving will play a part in the wear of your brakes.

For disc brakes, you can see the brake linings on the brake pads and I will consider changing them in pairs on the wheels when the linings wore down to about 1/16th of an inch. You can still have effective braking with them still.

Your vehicle drive train will also wear brakes more. If you have a front-wheel drive car, the front brakes will tend to wear faster due to having stop heavier momentum, likewise the rear brakes for rear-wheel drive. Take a look at the brake pads for best gauge to replacing them.

Most if not all cars with disc brakes have a little metal plate which rubs against the disc when you are getting to the stage where they need to be replaced, the wear indicator will make a screeching sound when it's time to replace the pads, my last set of pads lasted me 100,000 km's.I have disc brakes in the front and back. Disc brake pads have a sensor built in on them. It all depends on how much you drive your car. If your discs are smooth, your pads will last for a very long time. A good breakpad should last up to 100,000 miles.I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??
On all autos, with disk brakes, the brake pad has a flexible metal tab, that creates a %26quot;skreching/rubbing%26quot; noise when the thickness of the pad becomes unsafe. In most cars, the front wheels/brakes will wear faster than the rear pads. The amount that the car is used, whether in the city with a lot of stop and go traffic, or in the country, with long open driving condition, will determine the frequency of need to %26quot;re-do your brakes%26quot;. Of importance, if you do hear the sound of scrapping/rubbing noise, if allowed to go too long, will cause your brake rotors to wear abnormally. Making additional cost of brake repair. Usually when detected early, changing the pads frequently will prolong the life of your rotor, and even the calipers holding the pad will last longer. Your oil, and engine maintenance will be required a lot more often than the need to replace your brake pads. Most auto service centers, will provide a courtesy walk around inspection of your car when you take it in for your routine oil change service. A sign of wear of your brakes, is sometime seen as a black dust/powder showing through your wheels.

Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?

I am wanting to change my drum brakes to disc in the rear of my 01 celica gt. any ideas on how to do this and do it cost effectively?Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?
As the guy above said unless you are looking to race the car you shouldn't bother with that.

If you are persistent then search for 7th gen. celica forums and they'll have you covered.

Get braided stainless steel brake lines, slotted rotors (not cheap ones), and high end brake pads (EBC red stuff or Hawk HP+) or better, and your car will stop about 25 feet shorter than it does right now.

If you are able to do the labor yourself you are looking at $350 and up for that job. I can't give you a range on the high end because for all I know you could go out and get a big brake brembo kit and spend $2000 on brakes for the front end alone.Drum to disc brakes on 01 celica gt? how to do it?
You really should just forget about this. The reality is that the front brakes do 70-80% of the braking and that is because the rear end is so light and under braking the weight transfers forward so there is almost no traction on the rear. If you put on stronger rear brakes you run the risk of locking the rear wheels and the car will swap ends in a heartbeat. You will get more %26quot;bang for your buck%26quot; if you upgrade the front brakes with top line pads and drilled/grooved discs.

How do i know if i need to change my brake disc's?

If the brakes are not responding as they have been previously there may be a problem. You can take off the wheels %26amp; check the thickness of the brake pads visually %26amp; at this time your disc's are exposed check them for smoothness. If the disc's have ridges you can replace those or have them machined. Usually you could get them machined ok it depends on how thick the disc is. I hope this answers your question OK.How do i know if i need to change my brake disc%26039;s?
if they have grooves, marks, wobble, etc. A shop will tell you for free if they can be turned/machined, they dont always need replacing. there is a measurement and it is specific to your rotor or disc. take it in for a free inspection, most places will. How do i know if i need to change my brake disc%26039;s?
Most cars have a metal finger/spring attached to the disc. If the pad is worn down far enough the spring rubs on the rotor and makes a squealing noise. That's the usual clue. You can always visually inspect them and measure if the remaining thickness meets specifications and of course if the car doesn't stop as quickly as it once did or pulls to one side, or vibrates when the brakes are applied you need to have both the discs and rotors inspected.

  • How do i change the front disc brake pads on a 2000 dodge caravan?

i dont know how to remove the caliper holding the padsHow do i change the front disc brake pads on a 2000 dodge caravan?
Front pads are usually a piece of cake. Remove 2 bolts (upper and lower), swing caliper up. Remove pads. Squash cylinder with c-clamp %26amp; old pad. Install pads, swing caliper down, replace bolts. Bleed brakes as needed. How do i change the front disc brake pads on a 2000 dodge caravan?
You have to push in the caliper piston first by insurting a screw driver between the front pad and the disk ( Not between the pad %26amp; the piston you will break the piston ) pry till the piston is fully in the caliper . If you dont do this you will not be able to reinstall yhe caliper with the new pads because of the lack of room due to the thickness of the new pads %26gt; These are called floting calipers and adjust themselfs as the pads wear out . Now remove the two small headed bolts 3/8 i think ? that have a ruber boot atached to them , the caliper should come off now . Before reasembling clean the 2 bolt you have just removed well and apply a small amount of greece all along the bolt , the caliper slides along this bolt to self adjust and it has to move free %26gt; Good Luck Andre

You can e-mail me at aaagravel@yahoo.ca if you require more help .........What year is the caravan ???

Do it this way and you will not have to bleed the brake system ..How do i change the front disc brake pads on a 2000 dodge caravan?

How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?

how can i change my rear drum brakes into disc brake? and are they better? and how much would the rough cost be?How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?
Are they better? Absolutely. Difficulty? Well, its a bit involved - I haven't done them on a 4th gen, but on the earlier, you were best off swapping an entire rear axle from a disc-equipped car, or buying an aftermarket kit. On top of that, you need the proportioning valve and master cylinder for a 4 wheel disc equipped camaro.

I'd estimate the cost (with effective scrounging) to be about 1000-1200 bucks.

You can improve the braking performance of your rear drums by switching over to performance shoes on your 96. While they're not the equivalent to the disc setup, it will improve the grip and fade on your drums, and pairing that with performance pads on the front will net you a very capable braking system for a fraction of the cost of the upgrade. Unless you autocross or are into 0-100-0 contests, you may find that to be a very effective alternative. How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?
Easiest option, get a used rear end from a camaro that had disc brakes. Check ebay or a local parts lot.

go to camaroz28.com for advice on how to do this. those guys should be able to help you significantly on what all the job entails. How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?
Disc brakes are much better. They make conversion kits. Start with Summit Racing and check around. You do NOT need another rear end.How to convert my 96 Camaro rear drum brakes into disc brakes?

    What that guy said.

Besides, you'd also be getting that limited slip differential (Positrac) as well.

What is not to like about that?

$200 part or some stupid $500 kit?

    Exactly.

No prop valve necessary if I recall.

How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?

I am getting lots of conflicting information from different mechanics. There is noise in the car, and I am not using it much now because of it. I dont want to be charged to much for something I dont need. Would wear and tear distroy brakes in 30K miles (brand new), in heavy trafic?

How much do disks/ pad's cost to replace. The stupid dealer told me 600 bucks. Yeah right. Any ideas or suggestions on national brands where its reliable and cheap? How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
Well here is the most definative %26quot; that depends%26quot;.

You did not say what kind of car you have. In general the dealer does not beleive you know anything about cars so they can %26quot;take%26quot; you. Brakes jobs are fast easy and HIGH MARGIN.

Dealers are often trying to improve the bottom line.

That being said, Brake wear measurably depends on your driving style. Brakes wear quickly in two cases. Very good (ie.%26quot;agressive%26quot;) and very poor drivers. Poor drivers tend to drag on their brakes which heat them up and wear them out. Agressive drivers tend to use them hard which contributes to quick wear. 30K miles is not too much for front pads. I wear out pads on my pick up and minivan in 20K miles. The Mini and Camry go much further 35K and 60 K respectively. If you caught the required change before the pads broke down to the steel backer pads you do not need rotors. Do not let anyone change rotors without making them prove that they are either scored or warped. A simple pad change should be less than $ 200.00.

The only way a dealer could get to $ 600.00 is pads and rotors all around. That is excessive and probaby not required. Take the car to a place that will show you what they are talking about. Make them show you the pad material if there is a quarter inch of pad left you don't need them. If below a quarter inch change them.

Make them show you the rotors and their condition. If they are not heavily grooved or glazed and discolored they do not need replaced.

I have had good success with NTB or Sears Automotive not lying to me( at least less than the rest). I've never used Pep Boys but do not have a good opinion of Midas.

A good way to find out would be to take it to a tire shop and have the alignment checked and have them check the brakes while they are in there. If they are after the suspension you might get a better opinion of the brakes. You should be able to get the alignment checked, tires rotated and an oil change in the $ 80.00

range which is not money misspent. The money saved in tires by having the alignment checked is worth the expence anyway.

Depending on the car again your OEM tires will be leaving you in the next 5K to 20K anyway. Anything which prolongs that change is worth it.How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
try to use dealer pads, especially on late model cars.

30K is decent for front brakes to wear out.

brakes arent something you might or might not need. if the friction material is worn down to the limit, the car is unsafe and should be repaired. its as much of an issue as you want it to be.How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
they all have a squeaker build in, change a the first sign of squeakingHow often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
Yes brakes can wear out in 30k miles if their put under heavy wear and tear driving conditions. You can save yourself money by going through an auto parts dealer like Murrays or Autozone or Napa

You will also want to adjust your back brakes every 6,000 miles in stop and go traffic. It will help prelong the life of your brakes. Or use parking brake but this is depending on the model car. Check with your dealer. They will tell you up front. How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but yes it is very possible to wear out the brakes in 30 k miles. If you ignored the noise and let the metal backing on the brake pads eat into one or both rotors than it could be an expensive proposition. The most expensive brake job will be at the dealer, but you will get original factory parts and knowledgeable labor for that price. But if price is the main concern try getting a few estimates from brake places like Midas or Pep Boys. They can usually shave 20-50% of of the dealers prices, but use aftermarket parts. How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
This one's easy. Generally speaking, if your brakes are noisy and there's 30 thousand miles or more on the pads, change them. My sister knows how, it's not rocket science. Jack up your car and get after it. Always do both sides and check the rotors for uneven wear, most mechanics (shadetree and professional) recommend turning the rotors whenever you change your pads. I think that if your rotors appear to have even wear and no unusual problems, you can do it every other time you change pads. How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
The only way to know is to examine them for remaining material.

New pads cost about $20 and take a couple hours total to replace.

If the dealer replaces them they will turn the drums whether they need it or not. They will find a few other things to fix also.

The reason they replace unnecessary parts is because they have to warranty the work and people sue them if anything happens even if it isn't the dealers fault, so they have to cover their (hind ends) politically correct for a--s. If you want to do it yourself or have a friend help, buy a manual for the car at the parts store, and buy any tool they recommend Book $20, tools $20 Buy the pads at the parts store , not the dealer. Most aftermarket pads are as good or better than the oem.How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
It's not that expensive to chang the pads. The rotors need to be checked to see if they need to be milled down that is where the cost comes in. $600 to replace rotors and pads is a fair price from an OEM dealership. I wouldn't use Midas, Tuffy, etc. you see TV News shows doing undercover stings on these places all of the time, they always try to up sell if you need it or not. Get a good recommendation for an independant shop and have them do the repair. I have 63,000 miles on my origional brakes on my GMC SUV, still plenty of pad there. How often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
depending on what car you drive and how hard, but you,ve got your moneys worth out of those pads at 30k, discs prob change between 30 and 60k, as for 600 dollars your lucky, motoring is not a poormans hobbyHow often do you change car brake disks and /or pads?
30K is ok for heavy traffic. You use the brakes four times as much as someone on the open highway.

Believe it or not, I've found Sears to be one of the most honest and fair for brake jobs. 600 is a little ridiculous. You probably don't need rotors.
